The University of Wollongong’s (UOW) School of Law hosted the 2025 Jack Goldring Lecture, bringing together students, alumni and members of the legal community to explore the power of law in advancing fairness and equality.

The annual lecture commemorates Professor Jack Goldring, the founding Dean of UOW’s School of Law, who championed legal education that serves the community and advances social equity.

This year’s lecture was delivered by His Honour Judge Andrew Haesler SC, District Court Judge of New South Wales, who spoke on “Judging and Social Justice”. Judge Haesler reflected on how empathy and integrity can guide judicial decision-making and promote justice within complex social systems.

Judge Haesler’s distinguished career began in 1977 when, as a law student, he helped establish the Redfern Legal Centre. He went on to work with the Central Australian Aboriginal Legal Service, the Legal Aid Commission in Wollongong and later served as a Public Defender and Deputy Senior Public Defender before being appointed to the District Court in 2010.

A long-time supporter of UOW Law, Judge Haesler taught at the University in the 1990s and continues to mentor students, providing valuable insights into courtroom practice and access to justice.

During the event, UOW Vice-Chancellor and President Professor G.Q. Max Lu AO announced Miss Sarah Pearce as the 2026 Jack Goldring Memorial Scholarship recipient, recognising her exceptional academic achievements and service to the community.

The scholarship was created to honour the spirit of justice that defined Jack Goldring’s life, recognising law students who not only excel academically, but who use their education to make a difference. It celebrates those who see the law not just as a career, but as a calling – a way to serve others, to stand up for fairness and to bring a little more balance to the world.

A Bachelor of Arts – Bachelor of Laws student at UOW, Sarah has volunteered with the Aboriginal Legal Service NSW/ACT, served on the Board of the Wollongong West Street Centre, and coordinated community programs at the Lighthouse Community Kitchen. She has also mentored young women through YWCA’s Youth Frontiers program.

In her application, Sarah described her motivation to pursue law as a way to “advocate for vulnerable people and work in the community.”
