National sport competition brings community together

From 23-27 June the University of Wollongong (UOW) will host the annual Indigenous Nationals, presented by bp, and the community is invited to get involved.

UOW staff, students and community are invited to get involved and volunteer at the event as team liaison officers, marshals, scorers and event assistants.

Volunteer registrations are now open online.

The Indigenous Nationals is a yearly week-long multisport event that unites students from universities across Australia to vie in a range of sports, ultimately determining the champion university team of the games. This year students will compete in basketball, netball, touch football and volleyball.

Indigenous Nationals is an environment to not only celebrate the rich sporting culture of Indigenous Australia but to also acknowledge the heritage and history of the participating student-athletes. The games promote unity, health, fitness, and well-being, new communication networks and reinforce identity through positive role models.

Jaymee Beveridge UOW Vice President, Indigenous Strategy and Engagement is calling on the whole Wollongong community to help make the upcoming Indigenous Nationals an unforgettable success.

“Whether you're a die-hard sports fan or simply enjoy being part of the action, we invite you to join us as a spectator or an event volunteer,” Ms Beveridge said.

“From assisting with crowd management to providing logistical support to visiting teams, every helping hand ensures an exceptional experience for participants and spectators alike.

“I have had the privilege of attending seven Indigenous Nationals, I can attest that the event is an amazing experience, filled with celebration, spirit and community. One of the most rewarding aspects of attending the Indigenous Nationals is witnessing the positive impact it has on students.

“The Indigenous Nationals has become more than just a sporting competition, it has become a cherished tradition that illuminates our cultural connections and strengthens our sense of community.

“Join our team and be a vital part of the excitement, camaraderie, and joy that comes with hosting a sporting event. Together, let's create memories that will last a lifetime.”
