UOW’s upward climb continues in latest ‘ranking of rankings’
ARTU meta-ranking places UOW 10th in Australia and rising globally
The University of Wollongong (UOW) has continued its upward climb in university rankings, taking its place in Australia’s top 10 and rising four places to 184th globally in the 2020 compilation of the Aggregate Ranking of Top Universities (ARTU) released on 1 December 2020.
ARTU provides an overall indication of a university’s progress by ranking institutions according to a total score calculated by aggregating results in the world’s three leading ranking systems: Times Higher Education (THE), Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), and Quacquarelli Symonds (QS).
These global rankings systems include easily quantifiable metrics such as academic citations and publications, along with qualitative indices such as teaching quality and reputation.
In calculating an aggregate score, the ARTU accounts for performance variations due to methodological differences, resulting in a clear longitudinal comparison of overall performance that provides a realistic reflection of a university’s overall position relative to its peers.
UOW’s trend has been consistently positive, climbing from 267th in the world in 2012 to 184th in 2020.
UOW Vice-Chancellor, Professor Paul Wellings CBE, said he was very pleased with the latest result.
“This is an outstanding achievement for UOW in what has been a very difficult year.
“By improving our ranking domestically and internationally this year, we have continued our long term trend of consistent improvement that we have seen since 2012.
“This is the result of a combined effort by dedicated academic and professional staff, implementing sound strategy motivated by a shared committed to making a positive difference in the world.
“I am very proud of what we have achieved together and I congratulate all staff on this outstanding result,” Professor Wellings said.
