Open Day encourages potential students to experience campus life
Information sessions, tours, and one-on-one advice all part of annual event
Thousands of prospective students from across the state will have the opportunity to experience life at the University of Wollongong during the annual Open Day celebrations.
On Saturday 11 August, the University will be officially open for inspection, with high school-leavers and their parents, as well as potential mature age and post-graduate students, able to discover what makes studying at UOW a life-changing experience, from first-class degrees to exciting on-campus activities.
Experts from all disciplines and study areas will be on hand to answer questions about their courses and degrees as well as student exchange and scholarship opportunities.
There will be more than 90 information sessions held across the day, covering all study areas, UOW’s Early Admission program, postgraduate courses, UOW’s regional and metro campuses and UOW College’s academic pathways and vocational degrees.
In the Careers Service booth, students can meet with an experienced career adviser for a one-on-one personalised consultation and find out about the courses and support services available while they study.
There will also be tours and demonstrations running throughout the day, taking participants behind the scenes of the labs, workshops, and galleries.
Other tours include the Early Start Discovery Space, for those interested in early childhood and public health, and tours of the new Biological Sciences lab, which offers the latest in microscope technology.
In the Creative Zone students can find out how the media really works in the pop-up newsroom, watch performances or join a photography workshop. The STEM Zone offers a wide variety of demonstrations and hands-on activities for those interested in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
Prospective students can also take part in walking tours of UOW’s picturesque Wollongong campus, and discover what Wollongong has to offer with the hop-on, hop-off city bus tour. They will also be a walking tour of Kooloobong Village, UOW’s newest student accommodation.
Brad Carter, Manager of Domestic Student Recruitment at UOW, said the annual Open Day was an opportunity for students to find out what interests them and what the University has to offer.
“It really opens the world of university to future students,” Mr Carter says. “It shows them the amazing experiences that are available by choosing to study at UOW. It is the perfect time to meet the lecturers, find out more about the facilities available, and enjoy the great atmosphere on campus.
“Open Day really helps to reaffirm to potential students that they are on the right track in making UOW their first choice.”
There will be bands and DJs playing throughout Open Day, exhibitions from UOW’s Clubs and Societies. Many of the UOW’s cafes and eateries will be open, plus there will be a range of food trucks across campus.
To finish the day with a bang, the band Sheppherd will perform that evening as part of the Yours and Owls Big Top at UOW’s Innovation Campus. The event is all ages and tickets are $30.
Parking is free at UOW for the duration of Open Day, and there will also be public transport available, including free shuttle buses to and from North Wollongong Station. There are also free buses running from Liverpool and Campbelltown.
