Thousands expected at UOW Open Day
UOW opens its doors to prospective students.
The University of Wollongong (UOW) will give thousands of prospective students the opportunity to ‘try before they apply’ at its annual open day tomorrow (Saturday 19 August) with lots of activities and events providing a taste of what it’s like to be a UOW student.
The University will open its doors to the community from 10am-4pm, with around 9000 prospective students, parents, family and friends expected to visit the Wollongong campus.
Current Year 12 students will learn how they could get into UOW before their final exams with the UOW Early Admission program and hear about scholarship opportunities, guaranteed accommodation for first year students, overseas study opportunities and possible career opportunities after graduating.
All UOW faculties will be set up in the University Hall to answer questions, along with more than 110 information sessions and activities held throughout the day, as well as tours and exhibitions.
For those interested in the future of housing, the Desert Rose team will be explaining how some 200 UOW students from all study areas are designing, building and operating a futuristic solar-powered home as part of an international student competition in Dubai.
UOW Library’s Makerspace will be open for tours, current music students will showcase their exceptional talents and those interested in the growing field of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) will be able to get hands on in the STEM Zone with various demonstrations including seeing an industrial robot in action.
For the sport fans, the Wollongong Wolves and Japanese football star Yuzo Tashiro will be running drills and a ball juggling competition and Illawarra Hawks’ player Tim Coenraad will be featuring as a guest speaker at the Nutrition and Dietetics information session.
UOW Domestic Student Recruitment Coordinator, Patrick O’Connor, said Open Day is a great opportunity for students to confirm their options.
“Open Day will help reaffirm our students that they’re on the right track and it’s also a great time to meet the lecturers who will be teaching them next year and to see the faculties they will have access to,” he said.
“For those who have never been to Wollongong before, the hop-on-hop-off bus tours of Wollongong are a great way to see the area.”
To finish with a bang, The Last Frost hosted by Yours and Owls will be warming things up at UOW’s Innovation Campus.
Boasting an eclectic and epic line-up of artists that includes Violent Soho, Cloud Control, the Kite String Tangle, the festival is set to light up the night sky with alternative rock and luscious psych pop beats. The event is all ages and doors open at 4pm.
