Future leaders make top awards list

Graduating students from UOW are strongly represented on a ‘Top 100 Future Leaders Awards’ list just released through The Australian Financial Review.

Every year graduate employment website, GradConnection, conducts a nationwide search for emerging leadership talent -- the ‘Future Leaders’ who are coming out of Australian universities in association with the Financial Review.

Students from around the country underwent a ‘best-practice’ graduate recruitment process to find the Top100. UOW had four winners on the list and a further four who made the finalists’ list. Some of the UOW students who participated in the event can expect to receive job or internship offers as a result of being recognised as a future leader.

Director of Graduate Career Development and Employability, Martin Smith, said the goal of the awards was simply to provide students with both a meaningful experience of the competitive graduate recruitment process and an award that they can use to strengthen their chances of landing their dream career when they graduate.

“It also allows employer sponsors to connect with, and gain early access to, an amazing talent pool,” he said.

Students were selected not just on academic merit but also through psychometric testing, extracurricular activities, work experience and volunteer work. The best students were then invited to video interviews and on to an Assessment Centre.

A range of employers sponsor the awards as an addition to their recruitment initiatives with many employers offering finalists and award winners with opportunities within their organisation.

The Financial Review described Australia’s Top 100 Future Leaders as “the cream of the current crop of university students who proved their mettle in a selection process which mirrored what all graduates will typically go through when applying for a position with a major employer”.
