UOW's double world rankings success

The release of two separate rankings highlights UOW’s best ever results.

UOW's 40th anniversary year has taken on an extra glow with the release in London of two separate rankings highlighting UOW’s best ever results.

UOW has improved a further two spots in the world’s top 100 younger universities to be ranked number 31 in the annual Times Higher Education (THE) 100 Under 50. UOW was ranked 43rd in the same rankings in 2013 and lifted to 33 in 2014.

The THE 100 Under 50 complements the annual THE World University Rankings which will be released later in the year.

“The result reinforces the fact that Wollongong has become a benchmark for Australia’s new generation of universities,” Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Wellings said.

And the rankings success for UOW will be echoed in London with the official release of the QS World University Rankings by Subject.

Wollongong has scored its best ever result, as measured against the world’s universities, recording 17 rankings from a total of 30 subjects.

“This too is a terrific result for UOW and it’s the first time we have ever reached this level in the subject rankings. UOW is globally ranked as one of Australia’s best modern universities and currently sits among the top two per cent of universities in the world. These latest rankings mark another step in the University’s quest to reach the top 1 per cent of the world’s universities,” according to the Vice-Chancellor.

UOW was rated highest (in the top 100 institutions in the world) in the subject fields of Geography and Materials Science. Its other achievements included:

  • Top 150 institutions in the world for the fields of Engineering (Civil and Structural), Chemistry, Accounting and Finance, Business and Management Studies and Education.
  • Top 200 institutions in the subject fields of English Language and Literature, Engineering (Mechanical, Aeronautical and Manufacturing), Communication and Media Studies, Sociology and Statistics and Operational Research
  • Top 250 institutions in the subject fields of Computer Science and Information Systems, Engineering (Electrical and Electronic) and Environmental Sciences
  • Top 350 institutions in the subject fields of Medicine and Mathematics

QS is also expected to release its 2015 overall rankings results for universities later this year.
