The year that was at UOW

The year that was at UOW

A view of the year 2015 through the eyes of UOW photographer Paul Jones.

January 2015

Where else would you rather be on another scorcher day in summer. As you pass through the UOW pool turnstile, a sign reads “No running, No pushing. No bombing.” The sun is belting down, your towel stinking of chlorine and your Speedos sagging from the toll of too many laps.

This underwater angle with a difference, is of a swimmer diving off the blocks as she starts her daily lap swimming schedule.

February 2015

A worker looks over the building process as drilling pylon holes begins. iAccelerate is a business incubator designed to support UOW students, staff and the greater Illawarra community. In February, work began on the new three-storey, 4,000 square metre iAccelerate Centre.

The Centre will provide a permanent home for the Illawarra’s rapidly growing number of startup companies and features ‘plug and go’ expandable spaces for more than 280 entrepreneurs.

March 2015

If chilling out on the grass, listening to some great rocking tunes and checking out interactive art is your idea of a good Saturday, The Farmer and The Owl Festival held in March at the University of Wollongong was the place to be.

More than 2000 people packed out the duck pond lawn for a mega music feast. On the gig list were big-name rock bands like Jebediah, DZ Deathrays and local Wollongong psychedelic rockers the Walking Who.

April 2015

So ... who got done for April Fools' Day? It would seem quite a few students and the local media after this “doctored” photo image appeared on the UOW Official Facebook site.

May 2015

Possum skin cloaks are one of the most sacred cultural expressions of south-eastern Aboriginal peoples.

With assistance from UOW’s Batemans Bay Campus and a community engagement grant, The local Walbunja and Yuin people, from the New South Wales South Coast wove together their stories and cultural knowledge in the form of a traditional possum skin cloak.

The cloaks are made from numerous possum pelts sewn together with kangaroo sinew, and often decorated with significant incisions on the inside such as clan insignias.

June 2015

Researchers at UOW's Institute for Superconducting & Electronic Materials (ISEM) are working on improving lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries for use in electric vehicles, as well as portable devices like mobile phones.

UOW has proprietary materials technologies for the development of advanced lithium batteries for Electric Vehicles (bikes, cars, etc). Compared to currently unavailable batteries, these materials are deal candidates for delivering lower cost, longer cycle life, high energy capacity, and higher charge rate batteries.

July 2015

A UOW graduation brings out the photographer in everyone. The mid-year graduation ceremonies at the University of Wollongong attracted about 4,000 visitors, including an estimated 1,140 graduates.

Graduation presents an opportunity to showcase a range of people who are pursuing their passion, their career and furthering their education.

August 2015

It seems  the local UOW ducks don’t mind Thai food. Spotted doing a waddle though at a campus food court.

Dozens of people stopped and watched in amazement as the sord ignored the bustle of hungry students and headed towards the duck pond.

September 2015

As the UOW photographer I have the privilege of meeting, students, academics and guest lecturers on campus. Peter Greste is one such guest speaker who came to UOW for a guest lecture for journalism students.

October 2015

Thunderstorms roll across Wollongong Harbour bringing bursts of heavy rain, hail and damaging winds during the month of October.

November 2015

Part of and ongoing photographic documentary project for the University of Wollongong on our diverse multi-cultural society.

December 2015

I love creating whimsical adventures in a miniature-sized world. Created by arranging model tiny people and real life objects, these surreal scenarios are like a Gulliver's Travels world.
