‘Let’s Share a Story’, a literary resource for local parents and carers

A literary resource developed in consultation with members of Wollongong’s Indigenous community will be launched on Friday 16 October at Dapto Ribbonwood Centre.

‘Let’s Share a Story’ is a literary resource for local parents and carers to help children from 0 to 12 with their reading. The resource is packed with tips and information about the benefits of yarning and reading with parents, siblings, grandparents, Aunties and Uncles.

Booklets will be distributed to Illawarra pre-schools, schools and childcare centres, community centres and health services. The booklet is also the centrepiece of a package of resources that will be provided to selected pre-schools.

The booklet and package has been developed by the Illawarra-South Coast Sub-branch of the Children’s Book Council of Australia, and involved contributions of numerous members of local community, in particular, Coomaditchie United Aboriginal Corporation and Noogaleek Children’s Centre. The project has been supported by a Community Engagement grant from the University of Wollongong.

The booklet also features elements from a commissioned painting “Captured Images of Culture”  by well-known local Aboriginal artists Aunty Lorraine Brown and Aunty Narelle Thomas. Following publication of the booklet, the painting will be donated by Illawarra-South Coast Sub-branch of the Children’s Book Council of Australia to the UOW Art Collection to be displayed at Early Start. There it will be hung in a prominent location to inspire the students who are our future early childhood professionals.
