Students’ sights set on UOW for Open Day

UOW will lead the Open Day season among NSW’s universities when it opens its doors to about 5,000 potential students and their families on Saturday August 16.

Visitors will be streaming into the University from a range of local, Sydney and regional areas.

Many of those attending will be high school students who came to UOW as part of ‘Discovery Days’ in February this year and are now bringing their families to show them where they may possibly be studying and living. They will be deciding if Wollongong will become a preference for them with the Universities Admissions Centre. Joining them on the day will also be a number of mature aged students who gain entry to university via direct admission.

Students will be able to attend a range of campus tours and information sessions showing them what’s on offer, learn about the chance of gaining Early Admission and scholarship opportunities, hear about residential spaces, find out about chances to study overseas and what possible careers will follow university life. A special information session will also be devoted to parents of students. Residential colleges, the Library, science laboratories, lecture rooms and the University Recreation and Aquatic Centre will all be open for inspection.

Two big burdens have been lifted from the shoulders of students contemplating taking up university studies at the University of Wollongong and who now live many kilometres away in the country.

UOW Assistant National Marketing Manager, Deb Neich, said, many HSC students can find out before their final exams whether they have already gained a spot at UOW through its early Admission program, plus now UOW provides an accommodation guarantee for all first year students coming from outside the Wollongong region.

Ms Neich said it was a great way to get started for students now that the University could guarantee accommodation to country students.

UOW offers a range of accommodation options with various features, but they all have a high level of student support and security, and provide an ‘instant community’ for students new to Wollongong.

Ms Neich said students found getting into the Early Admission program enabled them to sit the HSC without that added stress hanging over them.

“We hope as many students and their families can join us for Open Day to learn how they can be part of a university which currently sits among the top two per cent of universities in the world. The independent Good Universities Guide has given the University a five-star status for its ‘educational experience’ and ‘graduate outcomes’ and this has been reinforced by the QS World University Rankings which shows UOW holding down a top 1 per cent spot for how the University’s graduates are rated by their employers,” Ms Neich said.
