Offshore Malaysian students pay a visit to UOW’s nerve centre

Forty-eight students studying UOW courses in Malaysia joined a study trip to Wollongong in September.

A group of Malaysian students studying UOW courses at INTI International University and College in Subang Jaya and Penang spent a week attending lectures and cultural events during a study tour at the University recently.

“The Malaysian students were here to experience Wollongong’s academic culture as well as, more broadly, Australian culture, which fits neatly with UOW and INTI's focus on a richly international and innovative learning experience,” Pro Vice-Chancellor (South East Asia) at INTI International University and College, Professor Tony Simoes da Silva, said.

Gerard Thangavelu, 20, says he wants to pursue a career as a radio announcer and is currently studying a Bachelor of Communication and Media Studies in Subang.

“I would actually really like to work in Australia as I have come to love and cherish the country since a young age,” Gerard said.

Michelle Ng Li Mei, also a Bachelor of Communication and Media Studies student at Subang, said she hopes to one day work for a multinational company in a job that allows her to travel and explore different cultures. Her study trip to Australia only reinforced her desire for an international career.

While at in Wollongong, the group of 48 students attended lectures for the degree they are undertaking in their home country. Australia’s relaxed but thoughtful approach to life and education was visible to Michelle.

“The culture and way of teaching in Wollongong is different to Malaysia. Classes are more interactive (in Malaysia, students will generally remain silent when there should be a discussion) and the general knowledge of the students here is superb,” the 22-year-old said.

“The environment here makes learning fun and relaxed too,” she added.

More than 1200 students are currently undertaking UOW degrees in Malaysian thanks to UOW’s partnership with INTI International University and Colleges.
