Hundreds join Walk for Reconciliation at UOW

Hundreds of joined Walk for Reconciliation from UOW to TAFE Illawarra on Thursday 29 May as part of National Reconciliation Week.

The event was organised by the University of Wollongong’s Woolyungah Indigenous Centre (WIC) and TAFE Illawarra. Indigenous comedian and entertainer Sean Choolburra performed at the event, as did the Street Warriors, an Indigenous hip-hop duo. The Doonootch Dancers Dance Company performed a traditional dance.

Jane Strang, Events and Community Engagement Officer at WIC, told ABC Illawarra that participants from a range of diverse cultural backgrounds had joined the procession from the Duck Pond Lawn to the Aboriginal Education and Training Unit at TAFE.

"There are people who are born in Australia obviously but there are people from all over the world who have come to settle in the Illawarra who now call the Illawarra home and they're here to walk for reconciliation," she said, adding that many people had contributed a 'hand' to the Sea of Hands display.
