AI is revolutionising many areas, and this includes science itself. The 2024 Nobel Prizes in both Physics and Chemistry celebrated AI's arrival as a transformative force in research. From materials to medicine, climate to cosmology, AI is accelerating discovery across almost every field of research. But this raises urgent questions: Who owns what AI discovers? Can machines truly be creative? This talk explores how AI is a tool that, like the microscope and the telescope before it, will transform how we see and understand the world.
Short biography of the speaker: Toby Walsh is Laureate Fellow and Scientia Professor of Artificial Intelligence at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of New South Wales, research group leader at Data61, adjunct professor at QUT, external Professor of the Department of Information Science at Uppsala University, an honorary fellow of the School of Informatics at Edinburgh University and an Associate Member of the Australian Human Rights Institute at UNSW.
