Nitrogen containing heterocycles make the largest contribution to all new small molecular pharmaceuticals. This talk will outline efforts to synthesise novel nitrogen heterocycles by cycloisomerisation reactions of allenes and 1,3-enynes. Part 1 will involve a newly discovered Alder-ene reaction of α-allenyl propiolamides to make α-methylene-γ-lactams. Part 2 will involve the synthesis of air stable Ni(0) complexes and their use in the cycloaromatisation of 1,3-enynes to make isoindolines.
