Visiting Research Fellowship program

Faculty of Arts, Society and Business Visiting Scholar Program

The Faculty of Arts, Society and Business (ASB) welcomes visiting scholars from Australia and around the world whose work aligns with our research priorities and contributes to our vibrant interdisciplinary research environment.

Visiting scholars play an important role in strengthening scholarly exchange, building national and international research networks, and enriching the intellectual life of the Faculty through collaboration, seminars and engagement with staff and students.

About the Visiting Scholars Program

The ASB Visiting Scholars Program supports scholarly visits that foster collaboration, research exchange and intellectual engagement across the Faculty’s disciplines.

The program is open to established academics whose expertise aligns with ASB’s research priorities and who are supported by a University of Wollongong (UOW) academic host.

Visits are typically self funded and subject to academic approval and institutional compliance requirements.

Who should apply

The Visiting Scholars Program is open to established academics from:

  • higher education institutions
  • research organisations
  • industry
  • government organisations

Applicants must demonstrate expertise aligned with the Faculty’s research priorities.

Duration and timing of visits

The duration of a visit will depend on the proposed scholarly activities, funding arrangements and host availability. Scholars are encouraged to plan visits during the Australian academic year to maximise opportunities for engagement.

How to apply

Prospective visiting scholars must first identify a University of Wollongong academic whose research interests align with their own and who is willing to host the visit. Applicants are encouraged to review ASB research areas and academic staff profiles before making contact.

Before any formal arrangements are made, the visiting scholar and proposed host should discuss:

  • the purpose and focus of the visit
  • proposed dates and duration
  • intended scholarly activities (for example, research collaboration, seminars or workshops)

A visit can only proceed once a UOW academic has formally agreed to act as host and support the visit. If a visit is approved, UOW Talent Acquisition will issue an official letter of invitation to the visiting researcher, which must be signed and returned prior to commencing duties at UOW.

Visiting research fellows will be required to provide the following documents during the application process:

  • A copy of your Passport
  • Copies of official academic transcripts and testamurs
  • A research plan outlining the research you intend to undertake during your visit and proposed activities eg. presentations, meetings, events

Once academic support and institutional requirements are confirmed, visiting scholars may finalise:

  • travel and accommodation
  • visa and insurance arrangements
  • visit dates and activities with their host

Please note that visitors are responsible for ensuring they hold a valid visa for entry into Australia that will allow them to engage in all the activities they wish to undertake during their stay.

If you are a UOW academic staff member and wish to nominate a candidate for the Visiting Research Fellow program, please refer to the procedure on our internal staff site.
