Citation delivered by Professor G.Q. Max Lu AO, Vice-Chancellor and President, at the University of Wollongong on the occasion of the admission of Robert James Ryan as a Doctor of the University of Wollongong (honoris causa) on 22 April 2026.

Chancellor, I present to you Robert Ryan.

Robert has provided exceptional service to the University of Wollongong, making a lasting contribution to its governance, strategic direction and connection to the Illawarra community for over a decade.

Appointed to the University Council by the New South Wales Minister for Education and Training in January 2010, Robert began a 14-year period of dedicated service marked by diligence, integrity and a deep commitment to the University’s mission. Throughout his time on Council, he brought extensive financial and governance expertise to some of the most significant decisions shaping the University’s future.

Robert served as Chair of key Council committees, including the People and Culture Committee and the Finance and Infrastructure Committee, where his thoughtful stewardship supported decision-making and long-term sustainability. In 2018, he was elected by his peers as Deputy Chancellor, reflecting the high regard in which he was held by fellow Council members and recognising his consistent contribution to the life of the University.

As Deputy Chancellor, Robert presided over numerous graduation ceremonies, personally conferring degrees upon thousands of students and sharing in moments of pride for families and graduates alike.

Robert’s impact extended beyond Australian shores. His governance expertise played an important role in supporting the growth and success of UOW Global Enterprises, including service as a Director of the UOW Global Enterprises Board and Chair of the UOW Dubai Board. Through this work, he helped strengthen the University’s global engagement and commercial capabilities.

He also played a pivotal role in supporting the establishment and development of the Early Start Discovery Space. This innovative facility has become a nationally and internationally recognised centre for hands-on learning and multidisciplinary research, welcoming tens of thousands of visitors each year and enriching educational experiences for families and educators across the region.

Alongside his university service, Robert has built a distinguished career in the financial services sector and currently serves as Chief Executive Officer of IMB Ltd, a Wollongong-based mutual bank with deep roots in the local community.

Through sustained service and principled leadership, Robert has made an outstanding and enduring contribution to the University of Wollongong and its community.

Chancellor, it is a privilege and pleasure to present Robert Ryan for admission to the degree of Doctor of the University of Wollongong, honoris causa.
