Emeritus Professor
Citation delivered by Professor Joe Chicharo OM, Interim Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Growth and Global), at the University of Wollongong on the occasion of the admission of Simon Ville as an Emeritus Professor on 24 April 2026.
Deputy Chancellor, I present to you Senior Professor Simon Ville.
Celebrated academic careers are defined not only by the scholarship they produce, but by the institutions they strengthen, the people they mentor, and the public understanding they enrich. Over more than two decades at the University of Wollongong, Simon has exemplified these ideals through exceptional scholarship, sustained leadership, and generous service to the University and to his discipline.
After completing his doctoral studies at University College London, Simon held academic appointments at the universities of Manchester and Auckland, and at the Australian National University, before joining the University of Wollongong in 2001 where he was appointed Professor. He was subsequently promoted to Senior Professor and served the University with distinction until his retirement in January 2025. During this time, he played a central role in shaping the University’s academic life, serving as Head of several departments and schools and as Associate Dean of Research across multiple faculty structures. He also undertook senior leadership responsibilities as Deputy Dean, Acting Dean, and Acting University Dean of Research, contributing thoughtfully and steadily through periods of organisational change.
Simon is internationally recognised as a leading scholar in economic and business history. His research spans Australian and global perspectives, with influential work on big business, trade and finance, natural resource economies, social capital, innovation systems, and the social and economic impacts of wartime service. A committed interdisciplinary scholar, he has published extensively across economics, history, management, and related fields, with 15 books and a substantial body of journal articles, chapters, and public scholarship. His work has attracted major competitive funding, including nine Australian Research Council grants, and has been published by leading international presses and journals. His latest book, on the history of multinational corporations in Australia, will be published next month.
The reach of Simon’s scholarship extends well beyond academia. His expertise has informed government policy, cultural institutions, industry organisations, and international bodies, including UNESCO. His work has been cited in Federal Parliament and widely discussed in national and international media. His standing in the global academic community is reflected in prestigious appointments, including two periods at Harvard University, most recently as the Gough Whitlam and Malcolm Fraser Visiting Chair of Australian Studies.
Simon’s career embodies the University of Wollongong’s commitment to excellence, public engagement, and academic leadership. His legacy will continue to shape scholarship, policy, and the University community for many years to come.
Deputy Chancellor, it is my privilege to present Senior Professor Simon Ville for admission as an Emeritus Professor.
