Senior Professor Mark R Wilson

Emeritus Professor

Citation delivered by Professor Adam Trevitt at the University of Wollongong on the occasion of the admission of Mark Richard Wilson as an Emeritus Professor on 4 November 2026.

Deputy Chancellor, I present to you Senior Professor Mark Wilson.

Senior Professor Mark Wilson is an internationally recognised molecular bioscientist whose scholarship, teaching and leadership have enriched the University of Wollongong for more than three decades.

Mark joined the University in 1994 as a lecturer and progressed through the academic ranks to become Senior Professor. Across his career at UOW, he built research capability, supported generations of students and staff, and helped shape the structures in which excellent science could flourish.

At the heart of Mark’s research is extracellular proteostasis, the study of the processes that control protein aggregation and related diseases in the human body. Through this work, he established a distinctive research niche at UOW and advanced understanding of how harmful proteins may be controlled or cleared, with significant implications for conditions including Alzheimer’s disease and motor neurone disease.

Mark has authored more than 150 scientific papers, many focused on this field, and his publications have collectively been cited more than 12,000 times. He has also secured or contributed to more than $8.5 million in external research funding. Through major equipment grants and the development of shared facilities, he strengthened research capacity not only within his own laboratory, but across the University’s scientific community.

Mark’s contribution is equally distinguished by his commitment to developing people. He personally supervised the research development of 54 Honours students, 17 doctoral candidates and three master’s students. In doing so, he helped emerging researchers build confidence, independence and scientific judgement. His teaching was practical and innovative, including new laboratory activities that enabled students to discover scientific techniques and biological processes through direct experience. This commitment was recognised through the Vice-Chancellor’s Excellence in Teaching Award and, later, the Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Supervisor of the Year.

His enthusiasm for research was matched by sustained academic leadership. Mark served for six years as Associate Dean Research, following two years as Chair of the Faculty of Science Research Committee. He was also Director of two UOW research institutes and, most recently, Deputy Director for Industry Engagement at the Molecular Horizons Research Institute. Across these roles, he strengthened colleagues’ grant proposals, contributed to research policy, encouraged collaboration and worked to improve the research environment for others.

Mark’s professional service extended beyond UOW through national grant review panels, an Australian Research Council review and editorial leadership for an international scientific journal. Yet the defining thread of his career is his belief that ambitious research is strengthened by kindness, humility and shared purpose.

Deputy Chancellor, it is my privilege to present Senior Professor Mark Wilson for admission as an Emeritus Professor.
