Professor Timothy McCarthy

Emeritus Professor

Citation delivered by Professor Mark Hoffman, Interim Provost, at the University of Wollongong on the occasion of the admission of Timothy John McCarthy as an Emeritus Professor on 20 April 2026.

Vice-Chancellor, I present to you Professor Timothy McCarthy.

Universities are shaped not only by the knowledge they generate, but by the values they model and the futures they help to build. Over more than two decades at the University of Wollongong, Timothy has exemplified this ideal through his leadership in engineering education, his commitment to sustainability and his enduring dedication to students, colleagues, and the wider community.

Timothy joined the University in 2004 as Chair of Structural Steel and Design in the School of Civil, Mining and Environmental Engineering, bringing with him extensive international experience gained in Ireland, France, the United Kingdom and California. From the outset, he played a transformative role in the Faculty of Engineering, combining a strong work ethic with a passion for inspiring students and reimagining how engineering could be taught, learned and practised in a rapidly changing world.

His most visible and lasting impact has been on engineering education. Timothy was instrumental in modernising the undergraduate curriculum, co-developing engineering subjects and reshaping core teaching in engineering mechanics. These initiatives introduced team-based, experimental learning approaches that improved student engagement and performance and remain central to engineering education at UOW.

He also championed the adoption of advanced computer applications, ensuring graduates were equipped with contemporary skills valued by industry.

Timothy’s commitment to sustainability has been a defining feature of his career. As Foundation Chair of the University’s Sustainable Futures Committee from 2021 until his retirement in 2025, he led institution-wide initiatives addressing carbon neutrality, renewable energy and sustainability education, contributing to UOW’s international reputation in global sustainability rankings. His leadership of Team UOW in two international Solar Decathlon competitions further showcased the University’s capacity for innovation, with student-led projects achieving world-class success and continuing as living laboratories on the Innovation Campus.

As Head of School, Director of the Sustainable Buildings Research Centre and mentor to hundreds of students and staff, Timothy has consistently demonstrated care, integrity and a deep commitment to inclusion and respect for diverse perspectives.

Timothy’s career embodies the University of Wollongong’s commitment to educational excellence, sustainability and service to society.

Vice-Chancellor, it is my privilege to present Professor Timothy McCarthy for admission as an Emeritus Professor.
