Toby Roberts is a proud Wiradjuri man, whose journey into mining engineering reflects determination, initiative, and a strong connection to community and Country. Having spent much of his life living on Yuin Country in the stunning coastal region of Jervis Bay, Toby later relocated to Wollongong to pursue higher education and career opportunities.
Now studying a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours), majoring in Mining Engineering, Toby has embraced both the academic and practical challenges of his degree. Engineering is known for its demanding workload, and for many students, finding meaningful, hands-on experience that aligns with their studies can be difficult. Rather than waiting for opportunities to come to him, Toby took the initiative to seek out industry experience that would complement his learning.
Through Prosple, Toby successfully applied for a summer internship with BHP, one of the world’s leading resources companies. This opportunity took him to South Australia, where he worked at a remote copper mine site located approximately five hours from Coober Pedy.
The internship, which was fully paid and included meals and accommodation, provided Toby with invaluable exposure to real-world mining operations. It allowed him to contextualise the theories and concepts he had been learning at university, bridging the gap between classroom knowledge and practical application in the field.
Beyond technical skills, the internship also helped Toby build confidence, industry connections, and a clearer vision for his future career. Toby is already thinking about his future and would like to gain a graduate program with BHP after finishing his degree.
Toby’s story is one of initiative and resilience—demonstrating how seeking out opportunities and stepping beyond comfort zones can shape a strong foundation for a successful career.
