How is this program run?

What will I do?

As a the Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health’s (SMAH) International Student Mentor you will be responsible for:

  • Enhancing the opportunities for domestic and international students in the faculty to interact and network with each other
  • Facilitate a greater understanding of different cultures and regions among students
  • Assist new international students in their transition period, helping them overcome the difficult period of adjusting to their new surroundings
  • Enlighten students of the variety of career paths that their degree can take them
  • Provide opportunities for new international students to develop skills applicable to the professional environment and to sustain their aspirations to complete their degree and reach their career goals  

How will I benefit?

You will:

  • Gain practical experience in cross-cultural and interpersonal skills
  • Interact with students from an array of cultures and nationalities
  • Advance your group facilitation and communication skills as you facilitate small groups of new international students
  • Gain a rewarding experience by enhancing the wellbeing of new international students
  • Work within a close knit team of International Mentors that will enhance your team work skills

Are there any special requirements for this role?

Yes, you must have completed a minimum of 48 credit points with a WAM of over 70 in a SMAH course.  


Minimum requirements for UOWx recognition

To receive UOWx recognition, you must complete the following:

  • An "engaged" student will need to complete 20 hours over a calendar year
  • A "highly engaged" student will need to complete 24 hours over a calendar year
