Professor Tony Travaglione

Pro Vice-Chancellor (Global Strategy) (October 2023 - Present)

As PVC Global Strategy, Professor Travaglione oversees and guides UOW’s internationalisation efforts and strategic global initiatives. His expertise and dedication play a pivotal role in further elevating our global standing and taking UOW’s excellence in education, research, and engagement to greater heights. He also plays a key role in shaping and advancing UOW’s internationalisation efforts and strategic initiatives on a global scale.

Professor Travaglione brings extensive experience and an exceptional track record in global partnerships and strategic engagements to UOW. Professor Travaglione joins UOW from the University of Newcastle where he was formally the CEO and PVC of the Newcastle Australia Institute of Higher Education, a fully owned entity of the University of Newcastle, based in Singapore. Prior to this position he was Chairman on the Newcastle Australia Institute of Higher Education Board and Interim Deputy Vice-Chancellor Global Engagement and Partnerships.

Professor Travaglione has taught at leading universities including Stanford University and the University of California (Los Angeles). In 2011 he was appointed Pro Vice-Chancellor for the Curtin Business School where he led the formation of the Curtin Law School and ensured the Curtin Business School obtained AACSB accreditation. In March 2017 Tony was appointed as the Pro Vice-Chancellor of Business and Law at the University of Newcastle.

During the time he held this appointment, Tony was appointed as President of the Australian Business Deans Council. 

While at Curtin University, Tony was part of the Curtin senior executive leadership team that saw the university rapidly progress in world rankings; from 429 in 2013 to 212 in 2016. In 2012 Tony was awarded the Paul G. Dunn award by the Vice-Chancellor for research leadership. This award is the highest research leadership award that is bestowed at Curtin University and only once in its long history has it been awarded to an academic from a business school.
