CHAOS THEORY is a powerful new performance work fusing idiosyncratic choreography and character-based story telling. Directed by Martin del Amo in collaboration with 2nd Year Performance and Theatre students, the piece playfully explores notions of order, disorder, complexity and randomness.
On a stripped-back stage, evocatively lit, a mesmerising physical score is forged from everyday movement and gradually unfolds. It is interspersed with captivating stories, ranging from the utterly fantastical to the hyper real. Sometimes whimsical, sometimes profound but always unpredictable - they conjure a cast of oddball characters including a girl who claims she can communicate with sharks, a wannabe-detective with a fear of caves and a blood splatter analyst in the making.
Martin del Amo, originally from Germany, is a Sydney-based choreographer and dancer. He started out as solo artist, acclaimed for his full-length solos fusing idiosyncratic movement and intimate storytelling. In recent years, Martin has also built a strong reputation as creator of group works and solos for others including Arena (2019), Champions (2017) and Slow Dances For Fast Times (2013). Martin’s Helpmann Award-winning Anatomy of an Afternoon, a solo for Paul White, which premiered at the Sydney Opera House in the 2012 Sydney Festival, was presented with great success at Southbank Centre London in 2014. His work has toured nationally in Australia and internationally to the UK, Japan and Brazil. Martin is a 2015 Sidney Myer Creative Fellow and recipient of the 2018 Australian Dance Award for Outstanding Achievement in Independent Dance.
