Many consider THE CHERRY ORCHARD Chekhov's greatest play. It is a beautiful example of Chekhovian style: the mixture of comedy and tragedy, a form that avoids melodrama by setting the most exciting events offstage, and the detailed characterization that makes Chekhov an actor's dream. THE CHERRY ORCHARD describes the lives of a group of Russians, in the wake of the Liberation of the serfs. The action takes place over the course of five or six months, but the histories of the characters are so complex that in many ways, the play begins years earlier.

THE CHERRY ORCHARD must be sold to pay the mounting debts, times have changed, demand for cherries is low and there is really no-one taking care of business.
The names and dates are changed but the spirit of Chekov’s original survives the comedy and pain of everyday things, the enduring peskiness of hope. Working from an adaptation by Tim Maddock who directs the piece, the students present a redacted version, a terse hour or so instead of a three-hour marathon, playing with digital projection, models and miniatures, shadows and puppets, and the late, great Elvis Presley.

THE CHERRY ORCHARD, a comedy about melancholia, loss and the march of time, yes, I know, none of those things sound very funny. Presented at Shopfront Theatre, Carlton, THE CHERRY ORCHARD is the final instalment in the season of graduating productions for 2018.

Director, Tim Maddock was a founding member of the Red Shed Theatre Company and later directed for Brink Productions, notably co-directing THE ECSTATIC BIBLE with Howard Barker and the Wrestling School for the Adelaide Festival 2000. Tim has worked as a director, designer and actor for theatre. Tim is currently studying for his doctorate (DCA) focusing on the centrality of scenography in his body of work and the development and evolution of his aesthetic approach to theatre.
