Overview

Leadership is an important capability in any career path. The evidence-based leadership knowledge and skills that have been found to promote productivity, profit and success in an emergency or disaster context will be developed in this course. Global, cultural and generational factors that can impact emergency and disaster leadership will be examined as will strategies for effective emergency and disaster leadership and leaders. Students will engage in tasks that facilitate authentic, work-integrated, case-based and problem-based learning. Students will also compile a portfolio of resources that will result in a toolkit that can be used in future jobs and roles.

Course Learning Outcomes

Students graduating from the Graduate Certificate in Emergency and Disaster Leadership will be able to:

  1. Integrate concepts, knowledge and models related to leaders and leadership in emergency agencies and disaster situations.
  2. Apply knowledge of effective leadership strategies and successful leaders to practice in relation to emergency and disaster situations.
  3. Review, analyse and synthesise information to identify and solve complex problems.
  4. Demonstrate critical thinking, evaluate and appraise new understandings.
  5. Communicate knowledge and ideas about theoretical concepts, related to leadership in emergency and disaster situations, to a variety of stakeholders.
  6. Make independent judgements across a range of emergency and disaster leadership related functions and contexts.
  7. Initiate, plan, implement and evaluate broad functions within an emergency and disaster leadership context.
