Everything you need to know to get a university scholarship
UOW scholarships help students from all backgrounds to succeed
July 13, 2026
Every year, hundreds of students benefit from UOW scholarships that relieve their financial stress and allow them to focus on their studies and enjoy uni life.
But for many, university scholarships feel like a myth – something that other people qualify for, that’s too complicated to apply for, or that wouldn’t help that much.
Let’s go back to basics and answer your frequently asked questions. Here’s everything you need to know about scholarships at the University of Wollongong (UOW).
What is a scholarship?
A scholarship is financial support – either a one-off payment or multiple payments over several years – that helps students cover the costs of studying at university.
Depending on the scholarship, that support might help pay for textbooks, living expenses, placement costs, relocation, or other study-related expenses.
In short, scholarships are designed to make university more accessible and help students succeed.
Am I smart enough to get a scholarship?
It's very likely you are.
One of the biggest misconceptions about scholarships is that they’re only for students with perfect marks. While there are scholarships that reward exceptional academic achievement, there are many others that consider different experiences and circumstances.
For example, equity scholarships support students who are experiencing financial hardship or other disadvantages. There are also scholarships for students from regional areas, people pursuing particular careers, and those who have demonstrated leadership or community involvement.
The reality is that there is no single scholarship student. If you think you might be eligible, it’s worth taking a look.
How much money can I get?
That depends on the scholarship. Awards can range from assistance with study expenses through to substantial financial support that can make a significant difference to the overall cost of university.
It could be a one-off payment of $1,000 or several thousand dollars per year for the duration of your time at UOW.
You can apply for, be offered and accept multiple scholarships. If there’s an issue with having two scholarships at the same time, it will be outlined in your scholarship offer letter.
Beyond the financial benefit, scholarships can also provide valuable opportunities such as mentoring, industry connections and professional development experiences.
Where does the money come from?
Some scholarships are funded directly by UOW as part of the University's commitment to helping students access higher education and succeed in their studies.
Other scholarships are funded by businesses, industry partners, government departments, community groups, charities, local councils and generous individual donors. These organisations often want to support students studying in particular fields, encourage future talent in their industry, or help students from specific regions or backgrounds.
The key difference for students isn’t usually the source of the funding, but whether the scholarship is administered by an external organisation or by UOW – meaning you apply and receive the scholarship directly through UOW, even if it isn’t funded by the University.
Are there scholarships for international students?
Yes.
UOW offers a range of scholarships for international students studying undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Eligibility requirements vary depending on the scholarship, so it’s important to check the details carefully before applying.
Are scholarships just for first-year students?
Not at all.
While many scholarships are aimed at students starting university, there are also opportunities for current students and even for those studying a postgraduate course. Some scholarships support students throughout their degree, while others are available once you have already started studying and demonstrated commitment to your course.
That means even if you missed out in Year 12, it’s worth checking back regularly. New scholarships become available throughout the year, and your circumstances may change over the course of your degree.
How do I find scholarships I might be eligible for?
All scholarships offered through UOW are listed on our scholarships website, where you can click through to find information on opening and closing dates, eligibility criteria, application requirements, and the value and duration of the scholarship.
You can also search for open scholarships based on your circumstances.

How do I apply for a scholarship?
The application process is usually more straightforward than people expect – some scholarships are even done through the UOW Early Admission application process.
You can apply for most UOW scholarships through the online application portal for future students and current students. You’ll need to submit a cover letter, resume, and one page outlining how the scholarship will help you.
Some scholarships have specific requirements and will ask for additional documentation like academic results or for you to submit a separate form. (For example, if you’re applying for an equity scholarship, you’ll also need to apply through UAC Equity.)
Make sure you read the scholarship’s specific eligibility criteria and application instructions carefully.
One important tip: don’t stop after applying for just one. UOW encourages eligible students to apply for multiple scholarships.
For external scholarships, check the Good Universities Guide.
Will I have to do an interview?
It depends on the scholarship and how many people have applied.
The Fees and Scholarships team will contact you about the outcome of your application, including if you have been shortlisted and need to attend an interview.
An interview is your chance to show the selection committee that you are the right person for the scholarship, so follow our interview tips to be prepared and make the right impression.
Is it worth the effort?
Absolutely.
Even a relatively small scholarship can ease financial pressure and free up time that would otherwise be spent worrying about expenses or working additional hours. For many students, that can mean having more time to study, participate in campus life and make the most of their university experience.
And remember: if you don’t apply, the answer is automatically no.
