Overview

Studies in the fields of communication and media will prepare you to succeed in advertising, digital communication, public relations and corporate branding. You will be able to research, plan, execute and manage marketing campaigns and acquire skills in issue management, product publicity, crisis communications, and media relations. Science is the search and application of information and understanding of the natural and social world using an evidence based approach.

The Bachelor of Communication and Media - Bachelor of Science will allow you to examine the rise of local and global media industries, audiences and practices, and critique their implications across technology, policy, social and cultural dimensions. It combines the practical, numeracy and computer skills of science with the critical and creative thinking skills, and effective problem solving skills learned from studying communication and media.

This degree will teach you the diverse skill set required for high achievement in a range of careers across both the science and communication industries. Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) skills are becoming increasingly important in Australia with forecasted growth in the Professional, Scientific and Technical Services Industry. This means that exciting employment opportunities and new career options for graduates are being created each day.

Course Learning Outcomes

The course learning outcomes in each of these degrees complement and consolidate outcomes in the partner degree. Applied across two discipline areas, the outcomes are achieved at a broader and more comprehensive level.

Course Structure

To qualify for award of the degree, the Bachelor of Communication and Media - Bachelor of Science, a candidate must successfully complete at least 216 credit points, comprised of:

  1. The core subjects for the Bachelor of Communication and Media (48 credit points);
  2. At least one of the majors in the Bachelor of Communication and Media (48 credit points);
  3. At least one of the major in the Bachelor of Science
  4. Electives to bring the total credit points to 216. These can be subjects offered by the Faculty of Law, Humanities and the Arts or other faculties.
  5. Not more than 90 credit points in 100-level subjects.

Majors

Students completing this degree will complete at least two majors. One chosen from the Bachelor of Communication and Media, and one from the Bachelor of Science. Follow the links to each Course Handbook page for information on the majors available in each degree.

Minors

Minors are available in the Bachelor and Communications and Media degree, as outlined on the Course Handbook page.

Students may also be eligible for other minors as part of their degree program provided they meet the requirements set. Minor studies consist of a minimum of 24 credit points, of which at least 12 credit points are completed at 200 level or higher.

Minors appear on the transcript (academic record), but do not appear on the testamur. To have a minor study recorded, students must submit an Application to Declare or Change Intended Major/Minor.

Work Integrated Learning

Undertaking a work integrated learning (WIL) experience during your university education is now a significant contributor to being competitive in securing employment in your field of choice when you graduate from UOW.

The Faculty of Law, Humanities and the Arts internship program provides students with an opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills acquired in their degree in a workplace setting.

Students' are also encouraged to consider CRLP200 (6cp). CRLP200 includes a quality assured workplace internship or industry project to give you that competitive edge by developing your professional skills through authentic learning in a real world context. You will focus on your career goals and receive career direction guidance, strengthen your resume and gain skills to navigate the rapidly changing world of work, develop your communication skills and begin to build a professional network.

Honours

Honours is an additional year of study that provides training in independent research. Students who complete the double degree with the required standard in the relevant major are encouraged to proceed to the Honours degree in either the Bachelor of Communication and Media (Honours) or the Bachelor of Science (Honours).
