Overview

The Graduate Diploma in Mental Health Nursing is a focused, clinically based course designed for a practitioner commencing the specialty of mental health nursing. It combines theoretical aspects of mental health to develop and refine clinical skills and interventions. 

The course is coordinated by the School of Nursing and is part of the Mental Health Nursing program within the Faculty.

Course Learning Outcomes

Students graduating from the Graduate Diploma in Mental Health Nursing will be able to:

1.  Articulate coherent and advanced knowledge of the principles and concepts associated with Mental Health Nursing and in particular as they relate to people with a lived experience of a mental illness.

2.  Apply knowledge of Mental Health to practice in relation to Mental Health Nursing

3.  Demonstrate cognitive and specialised skills reviewing, analysing and synthesising information to identify and solve complex problems.

4.  Critical thinking and evaluation to develop and articulate new understanding.

5.  Communicate knowledge and ideas about theoretical concepts related to Mental Health Nursing to a variety of audiences.

6.  Make independent judgments across a range of Mental Health Nursing related functions and contexts.

7.  Initiate, plan, implement and evaluate broad functions within a Mental Health Nursing context. 

8.  Incorporate/integrate principles of Australian professional credentialing requirements as they relate to policy development (practice initiatives) for mental health nursing.
