Overview
The Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics (BND) includes coursework, work-based learning in and development of research knowledge and skill. The aim of the course is to develop the knowledge and skills required by dietitians/nutritionists to work in a variety of community and public health settings, in food industry, private practice, hospitals, and other tertiary health care facilities.
Entry Requirements / Assumed Knowledge
Domestic school leavers are assumed to have completed any two units of English, plus four units of Science and/or Maths. It is strongly recommended that 2 units of Year 12 Chemistry are taken. Students who do not have Yr 12 Chemistry are strongly advised to take the Chemistry Bridging Course offered at UOW in February each year prior to commencing studies.
International students are required to have achieved an overall IELTS score of 6.5, with a minimum level of 6.5 in all bands of reading and writing, speaking and listening.
Course Requirements
The Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics requires the successful completion of 192 credit points of subjects in accordance with the course structure and recommended subject progression table below.
Students must achieve a minimum of a credit average across the first two years of their program to be permitted to continue into the third and fourth years of this degree. Students who fail to achieve this grade will be transferred to the BSc (Nutrition) degree.
This course includes a compulsory clinical placement component. All students will need to comply with the relevant occupational screening policy and vaccination requirements before placement. NSW Health can provide details of necessary vaccinations. In order to enrol in professional practice subjects, all UOW BND students must provide a completed National Criminal Record Check and a Prohibited Employment Declaration Form. Articulation with other UOW Courses
Students in the Bachelor of Science (Nutrition) who achieved a distinction average in 96 credit points (equivalent full time two years enrolment) of their course may apply to transfer into the Bachelor of Nutrition & Dietetics. Entry is competitive, applicants are ranked on the basis of academic merit by a selection panel once a year, a recommendation is made by the Course Coordinator and approved by the Head of school. Any course transfer offer is subject to availability of places - there will be limited places each year.
Course transfer applications from other UOW courses may be considered in exceptional circumstances, but only where the course is a relevant science-based degree and the student has a minimum of distinction grade average performance. These applications are competitively ranked. Ranking occurs once a year by a selection panel, a recommendation is then made by the Course Coordinator to the Head of School for a course transfer offer.
Students in the BND may apply for course transfer to the BSc(Nutrition) if they do not wish to complete the professional components of the BND or the four year equivalent full time BND program. Specified academic credit from the BND to the BSc(Nutrition) will be considered on a case-by-case basis; unspecified credit will be awarded for BSc(Nutrition) elective subjects. The BSc (Nutrition) course is not equivalent to the BND for professional recognition.
Students in the BND who intend applying for course transfer into other eligible UOW courses should obtain academic advice to inform their subject selections.
Honours
High achieving students will be eligible to apply for entry into the Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics (Honours). Entry into Honours requires the student to have attained at least a credit average in subjects undertaken during their undergraduate degree. For further information, please contact the Course Coordinator. The Honours grade will be calculated in accordance with the University of Wollongong Method 3. For further information refer to General Course Rules Section 8
Professional Recognition
The Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics program has full accreditation with the Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA), making all graduates eligible for the credential of Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) and Accredited Nutritionist (AN). Graduates can also apply for membership to the Nutrition Society of Australia (see NSA website).
