Overview

The Bachelor of Medical and Health Sciences Advanced Honours is a 4 year flexible program designed specifically for high-achieving students who have a passion to study the scientific basis of human structure, function and health. The course is built upon core subjects in first year that provide foundation knowledge in human anatomy, physiology and health. As the degree progresses, there are increasing opportunities for students to customise their program of study to include a wide range of biomedical and behavioural subjects related to the human body and health.

This Advanced Honours program provides all students with opportunities to develop their research knowledge and skills throughout their degree and the chance to participate in a variety of research enrichment activities with options to gain hands-on experience in the diverse range of research laboratories located within the School of Health Sciences. In the final year, all students undertake a substantial research project, via SHS400 Honours the one-year research thesis subject. This diversity and flexibility makes the Bachelor of Medical and Health Sciences Advanced Honours an ideal foundation qualification for a wide range of careers or further study in the medical and health sciences, including higher degree research (PhD) and postgraduate coursework studies in medicine and the allied health professions.

Entry Requirements / Assumed Knowledge

Domestic school leavers are assumed to have completed any 2 units of English plus 4 units of Science and/or Maths. Chemistry is highly recommended. Students who have not completed prior senior studies in Biology and/or Chemistry in the HSC are strongly recommended to enrol in bridging courses offered in February each year.

In addition to applying through UAC, students must submit an application form to the School of Health Sciences. Entry into this highly competitive program will be based on application, interview and ATAR.

International students are required to have achieved an overall IELTS score of 6.5, with a minimum level of 6.0 in all bands of reading, writing, speaking and listening.

Course Requirements

The Bachelor of Medical and Health Sciences Advanced Honours requires the successful completion of 192 credit points of subjects in accordance with the course structure and recommended subject progression table below. The course should not contain any more than 60 credit points at Level 100. Students may select elective subjects that contribute to the development of a recognised study “minor”, for example the Minor Studies in Introduction to Public Health (26 credit points; see Bachelor Public Health course entry UOW course code 1833), Indigenous Health Studies (see Bachelor of Health Science Indigenous Studies course entry), or Psychology (see Bachelor of Psychology course entry).

Students must have a distinction average in each session of study as an enrolment requirement for course progression. Students who do not maintain a distinction average in each session will be required to transfer into the Bachelor of Medical and Health Sciences. In the final year of the course, SHS400 does not have graded assessment in Autumn session. The final Honours grade will be calculated in accordance with Method 1, for further information refer to General Course Rules Section 8.
