Budget

Budgetary considerations are important ones for students who generally have limited access to funds. Check with your supervisor or Honours Coordinator whether your unit offers a fixed sum of money for Honours students. Alternatively, you may have a budget provided by the supervisor’s research grant. Your supervisor may be able to offer advice on additional funding sources; many scientific organisations offer small grants for Honours students, including travel.

Keep all your receipts, and a detailed record of any expenditure. Sometimes funds become available later in the year. You may also be able to claim some things on tax.

Questions to consider:

  • What do you need to do the project?
  • Who will pay?
  • What things are you expected to pay for yourself?
  • If consumables and other materials are required, whose responsibility is ordering, and how will this affect scheduling?
  • If you have a budget, what procedures do you need to go through to access it?
