Ride to Uni day - October 12

It's only 1 week until the Ride to Uni day celebrations! Improve your fitness and embrace an affordable, hassle and carbon free mode of transport.

There will be a free breakfast, stalls from local bike stores, bike maintenance, free engraving from the Wollongong Police Bike Squad and more on the McKinnon Lawn from 8 - 10 am. The first 100 riders to arrive will receive a prize and there will be a competition for the Slowest Rider and Best Magpie Defence helmet – let your imagination run wild!

It doesn't matter if you ride to Uni every day, or if you haven't been on two wheels since high school, the important thing is to get involved and make your ride count. Join the UOW team and register at ride2work.com.au to help improve bike facilities across Australia.

Here are some facts to encourage your riding endeavours:
• The risk of inactivity is 20 times greater than the health risk posed by a potential accident on a bike.
• 3 hours of bike riding a week reduces the risk of heart disease and stroke by 50%.
• A regular bike rider can be expected to be as fit as a person 10 years younger.
• Those that ride their bicycle to work each day showed a 39 percent reduction in the risk of all-cause mortality over 15 years.
• Women who ride their bicycle 30+ minutes a day have a lower risk of breast cancer.
• Every bicycle km ridden saves society 25 cents in the dollar, every car km driven costs society 16 cents in the dollar.
• Bicycles impose 95 per cent less traffic congestion than an average car, but if we were to shift a mere five per cent of car trips to bicycle, greenhouse gas emission impacts could reduce by up to eight per cent.

So hop on your bike!
