5:30 traffic - Try alternative route

UOW's looking at a new Western entrance from Robsons Road to help overcome traffic congestion. It would rely on more traffic utilising Robsons Road rather than Irvine St to arrive and depart the Uni. If shown to be viable it could be in place by 2010.

In the meantime, to reduce our afternoon traffic congestion on Campus, can we suggest drivers heading South should exit via the Western Entrance and head West to Robsons Road

Drivers heading North should exit via the Eastern Entrance

Drivers heading East to Wollongong could leave via either entrance, but if from the Western Entrance they should also use Robsons Road.

We wish to discourage those drivers leaving the Western Entrance from turning left down Northfields Ave, since this serves to hold up traffic leaving from the Eastern Entrance.

The Route South:
leave via the Western entrance, turn right into Northfields then left into Robsons Road. Turn left again at the end of Robsons Road onto Mt Keira Road then right onto the Princes Highway (or left into Wollongong). The Princes Highway South leads into Figtree or via an exit ramp onto the Southern Freeway. This route south from the Western entrance is actually shorter than the more conventional route via Irvine St and University Ave onto the freeway. During periods of UOW congestion it should also prove the faster route.

A map to assist will be available via www.uow.edu.au/about/transport in a few days time. In the meantime it's possible to see the streets involved at maps.google.com.au - search for "Robsons Road NSW" (please note that Google's map of internal Uni roads is slightly wrong, showing a third entrance which used to exist - this is not the proposed new entrance)

If you can, please have a go at this alternative route, it has the potential to significantly reduce our afternoon road congestion.

A mobile road sign has been set up at the Western entrance to remind you of this concept as you leave.

Better still, if you could leave your car at home and find a more environmentally friendly form of transport it would help everyone.
