Manage User Account (Email & Internet)

Information for Students

As a student of the University of Wollongong you are bound by the University's Information Technology (IT) Policies each time you use the University's IT facilities. The University of Wollongong is committed to the appropriate use of Information Technology and Services in support of its teaching, research, administrative and service functions.

The University has adopted IT policies which define the acceptable behaviour expected of users and intending users of the facilities. Students are expected to read the policies which are accessible at http://www.uow.edu.au/its/policies/

This page provides information to help you manage your University of Wollongong email/internet student user account.

Managing Your Password

In order to protect the University's information and transactions, passwords on student user accounts must be changed every 150 days. Prior to your password expiring, you will be notified via email. You should click on the link below to change your current password. Please be aware that once changed, it will normally take around 20 minutes for the new password to be active.

If you forget your username and/or password, or if your password expires, you will need to make a request in person at an authorised centre to have your password reset – you will need to bring your student identification card with you. It is not possible to do this via telephone or email.

In order to avoid the above inconvenience, the Password Reset Challenge was developed to allow University of Wollongong email account holders to reset their passwords without needing to make a request in person at an authorised centre. It is suggested that you take the time to set up your Password Reset Challenge now. Read more...

Closure of your Student User Account

Continued access to a student user account is maintained automatically based on records in the University Student Management Package. A student user account remains open while ever:

  • An undergraduate, postgraduate coursework or postgraduate research student has an “active” course. A retention period of three months is accommodated; as such the account closes three months after the course is completed. Where a course is closed for reasons other than completion, e.g. where the course is lapsed, given exclusion due to minimum rate of progress, a retention period of 14 days applies,
  • A non-award or WCA student has a current or future subject enrolment. A retention period of 21 days is accommodated i.e. accounts in this category close 21 days after the end date of the student’s most recent subject enrolment.
  • A miscellaneous student is attached to a current miscellaneous student group. A retention period of 7 days is accommodated i.e. accounts in this category close one week after the end date of the student’s most recent miscellaneous student group enrolment.

More information on user account management is available in the User Account Management Policy at http://www.uow.edu.au/its/policies.

Access to the Internet

On campus you can connect to the internet or read your email at the Library or from one of many student computer laboratories, or by connecting to the University of Wollongong wireless network. Wireless laptops and wireless network cards are available for loan within the Library.

To connect to the internet or read email from off-campus, you will need to sign up with an internet provider. Dial-in access to the University network is only available for postgraduate research students. Read more...

Managing Your Quota

Internet Quota

Students are assigned an internet quota to allow the University to manage internet usage and safeguard the University's capacity to continue to offer adequate Internet access for academic purposes. You will receive an email letting you know when you have used 25% of your quota, and again at 50% and 75%. Once you reach 100% you will be unable to access any external sites.

If you have exhausted your web quota and wish to have it raised for educational purposes, you will need to lodge an online application which will be sent to the faculty in which you are enrolled. Your past download history will be accessed and considered before a decision is made regarding the application.

Email Quota

Students are assigned an email quota on their University email account that limits the amount of storage available for their emails. You will receive an email letting you know when you are at 85% of your quota, once you reach 100% you will be unable to receive any further email.

Should you use up your quota you will need to delete stored emails, including any sent mail, to recover some available quota. You can check your available quota by logging on to webmail (see Managing your Webmail Settings.)

Accessing your email from off-campus

It is recommended that you use University Webmail for your email purposes. This is a browser-based email service (similar to Hotmail) and requires very little setup. However, if you want to use an email client such as Outlook Express, the following information is provided to assist in setting up your email account.
