Turnitin at the University of Wollongong

Turnitin is an electronic text matching system that compares text in a student assignment against electronic text
  • on the publicly accessible Internet,
  • in published works (including ABI/Inform, Periodical Abstracts, Business dateline, and electronic books),
  • on the ProQuest and Gale commercial databases, and
  • in every assignment previously submitted to Turnitin by students in universities all over the world, including assignments obtained from ‘paper mills’ (Internet sites which sell papers).

Turnitin provides a means of strengthening the implementation of the University’s policy on acknowledgement practice; however, equally if not more importantly, Turnitin can be used to assist in educating students about referencing and plagiarism.

This pdf resource explains how Turnitin works and how it is used at the University of Wollongong. It also includes instructions for use of Turnitin by staff and students and provides links to resources for teaching students about referencing and plagiarism. The resource does not include the University’s account ID and account join password; staff need to request these using the eTeaching Support Request form.

To access:

  1. Log on to the staff Intranet
  2. From the Home page, click Help! Request support link (located under the eLearning banner on RHS of page)
  3. From the System dropdown, select Turnitin
  4. Enter request details and click Submit button

Support staff will contact you with account ID and password details.
