Information for Parents

Adjusting to parenting a University student can present many challenges. By taking an interest and playing an active role in your child’s transition you can help them get the most out of their studies as well as make things easier for yourself.

What can I do to help?

As a parent, there are a number of things that you can do to help make things easier for both you and your child, including:

  • Taking a tour of the campus with your child
  • Attending an information session with your child
  • Going to the Parent’s Welcome
  • Being aware of important dates on the University calendar like the examination period, enrollment dates and orientation week
  • Discuss the subjects your child is taking with them. Encourage them to choose subjects that they have an interest and aptitude for
  • Encourage them to budget their money carefully and make smart financial decisions like choosing a prepaid mobile phone rather than one on a plan
  • Find out about the support services available and encourage them to use them when they have a problem. The Student Services website has information about what they offer, including the Counseling Service and Disability Services

Many of these ideas are discussed in further detail at the Prospective Students – Parents page.

Moving away from home

For many first year University students, the challenges of their studies are coupled with the challenges of moving away from their parents. Parents of students who will be moving into University operated residences should visit the UOW Accommodation Services Information for Parents and Guardians website.
Parents of students who are planning to rent privately or through an agent are encouraged to read ffice of Fair Trading publication, 'The Renting Guide'.
The WUSA (Wollongong Undergraduate Students Association) also provides a Tenancy Officer who can help parents and students. If you have any problems regarding the renting of private accommodation or if there is anything you do not understand you can speak to a Student Equity and Diversity Liaison Officer (SEDLO) or phone the NSW Office of Fair Trading on 133220.
