Dean of Students

The Dean of Students is the Students’ Ombudsman and investigates (i) Stage 3 academic grievances for undergraduate and coursework students and (ii) serious grievances unresolved by the Faculty and/or Professional Units.

1. ACADEMIC GRIEVANCES

There are three stages in the academic grievance process. If you are an undergraduate or coursework student and have completed Stage 1 and Stage 2 of the grievance procedures as outlined in the Student Academic Grievance Policy, i.e.

  • Stage 1: Informal Resolution—you have approached the person(s) directly involved to discuss the matter eg Subject co-ordinator; and
  • Stage 2: Formal Resolution by Faculty—you have lodged a formal grievance application, in writing, to a person (or committee) specified by the Faculty (e.g. Head of School, Program Administrator, Sub-Dean, Associate Dean, Dean)

and the matter remains unresolved you may submit a Stage 3 grievance, in writing, to the Dean of Students within ten (10) days of receiving a response from the last person involved at Stage 2 of the process. All documentation i.e. copies of your Faculty Stage 2 grievance form or any correspondence concerning your issue must be attached to your letter before an investigation can begin.

For further information see the Student Academic Grievance Policy:

If you need advice or assistance in preparing your appeal you may contact your Advocacy Officer.

2. SERIOUS NON-ACADEMIC GRIEVANCES NOT DEALT WITH BY ANOTHER UNIVERSITY COMMITTEE

Matters that are considered serious or unlawful may include, but are not limited to, sexual harassment, all matters covered by the grounds of anti-discrimination laws and those contrary to the University’s codes and rules.  Grievances of a serious nature would normally be submitted in writing by the complainant.
