Weerona College

Weerona College was officially opened in 1990, and is now home to 204 residents from all over the world. The college aims to provide an atmosphere that is not only conducive to study but also to social and personal development.

Weerona College has 35 shared rooms and 134 single rooms, and they are filled by undergraduate and postgraduate, domestic and international as well as study abroad students. Each year there are approximately 60 international residents adding to the diversity of the community.

Facilities such as toilets, bathrooms, common rooms, laundries and dining are all shared.

Weerona College is ideally located in the heart of Wollongong. It is within easy walking distance of the University, Crown Street Mall, Beaton Park and the beach as well as many other local attractions.

Weerona is a fully catered college, where 19 meals a week (all meals excluding weekend lunches) are provided. Any special dietary requirements can be taken care of by the kitchen staff. College rooms are cleaned fortnightly and common areas (such as bathrooms, toilets and common rooms) are cleaned daily. A maintenance staff is available during office hours for all problems, as well as after hours for emergencies.

The aim of the staff at Weerona is to make the year a safe, happy and successful one for all residents. The Head of College, Leanne Robinson, has ultimate responsibility for all matters pertaining to college, and is assisted by Administrative Assistants, a Catering Manager and a team of housekeeping and maintenance staff. Any enquiries can be directed to Rene Bitabara by email or by phone (02) 42215240.

Moving away to college is a major step in life, and this is recognised by the support structures in place at Weerona.

Tutors: On each floor there resides a Tutor in Residence, these tutors are experienced with college life and are all in the latter part of their degree or doing post-graduate work. Tutors are not just responsible for academic support, but they are also there for any emotional support (such as culture shock, moving away from home or exam pressure) that may be needed. Throughout the year tutors will also organise activities to help build better study habits, or to take a break from studying altogether (such as camping trips).

Residents Association (RA): There are 9 members of the RA and they are responsible for bringing a large and varied calendar of events catering or all residents. There is rarely a week that goes by without an activity of some sort, and the RA caters across the board with a variety activities falling into: sport, social, cultural and community categories.

Student Development Assistants: These two new positions are responsible for even more student development in the fields of academic and cultural assistance. The academic assistant works to provide stronger links between students and academic staff and programs, whilst the cultural assistant works towards appreciating and celebrating the diversity of college residents.
