Campus East is located in the beachside suburb of Fairy Meadow, a 10-minute drive north of the main University of Wollongong campus. The complex has a number of different styles of accommodation and is home to 555 undergraduate and postgraduate students from all over the world.
The styles of accommodation available are
- Flexi-catered single study-bedrooms in two, three, four or five bedroom units (425 places);
- Self-catered single study-bedrooms in one, two, four or five bedroom units (130 places).
More specifically the areas/unit designs that are available are –
- West Block – Flexi-catered - Units in groups of 3 or 4 study-bedrooms with shared bathroom. [Ground to second floors.]
- West Block – Self-catered – 1 or 2 study-bedroom units with kitchen/living/dining room and bathroom. [Ground to second floors.]
- Trench Town – Flexi-catered - Units in groups of 2, 3 or 4 study-bedrooms with shared bathroom. [Ground floor only.]
- A/B, C & D Blocks – Flexi-catered - Units in groups of 5 study-bedrooms with small shared common area (couch, sink, small refrigerator), shower and toilet rooms. [Ground to second floors.]
- E, F & G Blocks – Self-catered – Units in groups of 4 or 5 study-bedrooms with full kitchen, living/dining room, balcony, shower and toilet rooms. [Ground to third floors.]
- J Block – Flexi-Catered – Units in groups of 5 study-bedrooms with small shared common area (couch, kitchenette, TV/DVD player), shower and toilet rooms. [First floor only.] [Postgraduate students only.]
- In addition to expressing a preference for one of the above areas, potential residents may express a preference for single or mixed gender accommodation. From 2008 a “no alcohol” floor on the second (top) floor of C Block is another option. In this area residents agree that they will not consume alcoholic beverages in their rooms, common areas or corridors.
Leading Australian residential colleges and halls, Campus East introduced for the 2007 Academic Year a new style of accommodation flexi-catered where residents purchase their meals via a Flexi-Choice Meal Card. This new style is the ultimate in flexibility. You can eat breakfast, lunch and dinner in the Dining Room seven days per week or pack a sandwich or salad lunch to take with you to the Universitys main campus on weekdays. If you have significant casual work commitments, like to travel home for the weekends, or just want to sleep in of a morning you only pay for the meals you eat.
Residents at Campus East enjoy:
- their large and truly multicultural community;
- a comprehensive pastoral care system and academic assistance program;
- taking advantage of the beach being just minutes away, running and bike tracks, large playing fields and the Campus East Gymnasium that is open for three hours each day of the week;
- a user-pays shuttle bus system to the Universitys main campus that operates from Monday to Friday from 8.00 a.m. to 10.00 p.m.;
- a wide range of social, sporting, cultural and community service activities;
- a single occupancy study-bedroom (furnished with single bed, desk, chair, wardrobe, book shelves);
- all rooms having in-room internet access and a telephone in each unit (and in some cases, each room);
- three student computer laboratories and Information Technology Assistants on site to assist you connecting to the internet. ;
- laundries located in, or close to, each living block.
The Head of Campus East, James Atkinson, has over 18 years experience in managing university residential colleges and halls both in Australia and the United States of America. He lives in the Heads Residence on campus with his wife and two young children. Mr. Atkinson was the first serving head of college to be elected an honorary fellow of the National Association of Australian University Colleges, the peak representative body for tertiary students living in college, reflecting his commitment to a student-focussed collegiate experience. Supporting Mr. Atkinson is a large team of pastoral, administrative and operational staff, each of whom is committed to providing Campus East residents with the best possible environment for living and learning.
At Campus East we are committed to supporting each of our residents. A team of 20 Residential Advisors are placed throughout the residential community and their role is to facilitate the development of an appropriate community within their area of responsibility. They are also available to assist or provide referrals to residents who require academic or personal support or counselling.
Campus Easts Coordinator of Student Development Programs, Thidarat Thongdang oversees the colleges academic support, monitoring and recognition programs. Ms. Thongdang has extensive connections into the Universitys faculties and schools and the Academic Registrars Division which enable her to direct Campus East residents in need to the most appropriate academic support services.
Four resident-based committees – Sports Committee, Social Committee, Cultural Committee and Community Service Committee – coordinate a wide range of activities to meet the diverse interests of the residential community. Residents may also form their own groups or clubs and receive financial assistance from the Community Activities Fund.
