Global Wellbeing Residential Scholarships
To mark 30 Years of International House, the International House Global Wellbeing Residential scholarships are being launched.
With your help and that of your fellow alumni, International House aims to raise $5000 by the end of the year. This will allow us to offer 5x $1000 residential scholarships to our residents who have demonstrated intercultural leadership and embody our goal of fostering intercultural friendship and understanding.
Why support International House? Each year International House is home to 218 residents from 35 nations.
By being part of the International Houses Worldwide network and through the high quality programs of activities, International House offers a unique and high quality living and learning experience. In 2008 International House was awarded the University of Wollongong Vice Chancellors General Staff Award for Outstanding Contribution to Teaching and Learning- for the iLIVE program at International House.
Some recent examples of the activities that promote global wellbeing and intercultural leadership within the iLIVE program are:
- Hosting two East Timorese artists in residence and creating a peace mural in the city of Wollongong
- Two residents visiting one of the International House World Vision sponsorship children in Vietnam
- Working with SCARF in Wollongong to assist refugee families of the Illawarra
Supporting International House means supporting an environment that encourages cultural understanding and international friendship. It means developing young people to work across cultures to serve the wellbeing of nations on a larger scale.
How do these projects meet the vision and strategic directions of the University of Wollongong?International House and its vision is at the centre of the international and community engagement strategies of the University of Wollongong. By supporting students from around the world to live together in a well organised residential program, the residents perform better academically, are less likely to leave university prematurely- and importantly they develop international friendships - consistent with the international reputation of the University of Wollongong.
Why support Global Wellbeing residential scholarships?
Global Wellbeing residential scholarships are available to all residents of International House at the University of Wollongong.
Applicants must demonstrate that they are intercultural leaders through active involvement in the community and projects and initiatives that work towards the International House mission of “Global Wellbeing starts here".
Education is a significant part of global wellbeing. These scholarships support those who are less likely to be represented in the university based residential setting.
Five of these $1000 scholarships will be awarded each year from 2010 to celebrate 100 years of International Houses Worldwide. Supporting these scholarships is a commitment to diversity of the residence.
