Year 10-11 Students

Why study at University?

  • A Bachelor degree can help you land the job of your dreams.
  • In a competitive work environment, sometimes just having a degree can make a difference.
  • You'll develop knowledge and skills which will be useful in a variety of work settings.
  • You'll broaden your mindset, meet new friends and have a lot of fun.

What can I study?

Almost anything! A good starting point is to think about jobs that interest you. Then find out what qualifications can lead you there. Check out which universities offer relevant degrees. Finally, find out what subjects they recommend you take in Years 11 & 12.

When you decide on what degree you want to do, and if it's possible: try and pick subjects in your 1st year at uni that will help keep your options open.

The University of Wollongong provides a lot of flexibility with double degrees and double majors and the possibility to transfer between degrees (conditions apply).

With some degrees (eg, a degree in the Faculty of Arts), you don't have to have to make any big decisions about what you want to major in before you start. You can choose lots of different subjects and make a decision in your 2nd year about where you want your studies to take you. Remember too that there are more ways than one! For example, if you want to be an accountant, some universities may offer a Bachelor of Accounting, but other universities may offer a Commerce or Business degree that specialises in Accountancy. To see what degrees UOW offers, go to our CourseFinder.

What are the entry requirements?

Generally, for Bachelor degrees applicants must complete the NSW HSC or equivalent and admission to most university courses is based on the Universities Admission Index (UAI). However there may be other entry requirements.

Please refer to specific entry requirements for each degree, as specified in our CourseFinder or as listed in each of the Undergraduate course information brochures.

For more information on interstate or overseas equivalents, see our CourseFinder or contact UOW on 1300 367 869

Other entry requirements

Bachelor of Creative Arts and any Creative Arts double degree

For entry you will need to complete a Creative Arts Interview/Audition application form and (where appropriate) supply a portfolio of your work.

This is to be sent to the Faculty of Creative Arts by 30 September 2008. Applicants need to meet both artistic qualifications, determined by an interview or audition, together with an appropriate UAI score (or equivalent).

Double degrees

Before enrolment it is advisable that you discuss this option with both faculties. You will need to satisfy the entry requirements of both degrees.

FAQs

Question Do you have to go to uni straight after school?
Answer: No, you don’t have to go to uni straight after school. You can choose to enter the workforce, study elsewhere (eg, TAFE or at a private college) or take a year off to travel (or whatever). You can always decide to go to Uni later on in life.

If you do decide to apply for uni straight after school and then change your mind, you can always defer. If you’re offered a place at the University of Wollongong, you can defer for up to one year.

Question Do you have to go to uni every day?
Answer: No. Except for the fact that classes are held Monday through to Friday – it’s totally different from school.

Your degree will almost certainly be a combination of subjects that are compulsory (which are offered at specific times) and electives (subjects that you choose, and which are offered at a variety of times).

You may find you can timetable your subjects so you’re only attending uni 3 days a week, however your days will be pretty full-on and you may have to attend uni anywhere between 8.30am to 8.30pm.

Question What subjects can I study at uni?
Answer: It varies from degree to degree. Normally a degree will be a combination of subjects that are compulsory and electives (subjects that you choose).

Generally speaking, students find they enjoy studying at uni more than school because they’ve chosen a degree (and elective subjects), which interests them.

Question Don't you have to be rich to go to uni?
Answer: Not necessarily. The main cost at undergraduate level are: Commonwealth Supported Places student contributions.

There are flexible payment options for Commonwealth Supported Places. You may be eligible for financial help which is available through Centrelink.

There are plenty of ways of saving money with the other costs associated with studying at uni, such as textbooks (eg, buying from second-hand bookshops).
