Questions:

What excited you most about coming to uni?
The opportunity to study in areas that I was really interested in, as opposed to many years of subjects I was forced to do! University seemed like a great place to learn and grow, and so far, it’s definitely lived up to my expectations.

When did you know that you wanted to come to UOW?
After coming to the 2006 Discovery Days. Before this, I had not even considered UOW, but experiencing UOW for a day, meeting some great people, seeing the campus and also seeing the city made me realise that UOW was a great option that I should seriously consider.

What’s your favourite class and why?
CCS105: Introduction to Communication and Cultural Studies. One of my first media studies subjects, it gave me a great taste of what to expect from my degree, but also a great taste at what university study offers. We learnt the basics of media and cultural studies, looked at ways to interpret media texts, and at one point were even analysing popular music to find the meaning. A combination of study and listening to music sounds great to me!

Where’s your favourite spot on-campus? Why?
The Duckpond lawn- when the weather’s good, you can lay around, catch up with mates, grab a snag if there’s a BBQ on, and the wireless network allows you to use your laptop and work out there too.

Favourite thing about being at Uni?
The combination of learning and a great social atmosphere. Being able to come out of a lecture or class, catch up with mates, listen to some music on the Duck pond lawn, get involved in some great discussions, meet people from other cultures or get involved in a club or society…the possibilities are endless!
What’s it like living on-campus?
Living at one of UOW’s colleges is a great way to immerse yourself in the university lifestyle, and get rid of a lot of the hassles of moving from home. You meet so many new people and make some great mates, all the while staying in an environment that gives you some great and gives you the opportunities to really grow as a person.

What do you like best about Wollongong?
The size and friendliness of the place. I was at one stage considering one of the Sydney universities, but I found the whole environment too impersonal. Wollongong has a great balance between having everything you need, but not being a really big place. It’s also not too far from Sydney, so when we go up to catch a concert or visit mates, it’s not too far away. And of course, you can’t forget the beach. Coming from a place that’s a few hours away from anything that resembles a beach, being able to head down to the surf before class is awesome.

What kind of career might you like to pursue after graduation?
I have a lot of ideas of where I’d like to work, but broadcast journalism is the main area that I’m interested in. If I could combine this with working overseas, I’d be pretty stoked!

How have extracurricular activities impacted on your experience at UOW?
Participating in extracurricular activities has been the best part of my university experience so far, enabling me to meet some great people and get involved in some amazing opportunities, and in the end, getting so much more out of my degree. UOW has an incredibly diverse range of activities on offer, from clubs and societies to leadership programs to opportunities for practical work experience and so much more, all allowing you to have a great time while you’re learning some great skills.
