Travelling around Wollongong
Wollongong is supported by a reliable public transport network. There are a variety of options - both private and public - that you can choose from to travel around Wollongong or even to Sydney. These include travelling around by car, train, bus, shuttlebus, bike, taxi or plane for longer distances.
Travel Options
Cars
If you are staying in Wollongong for an extended period, renting or purchasing a car may be a suitable option for you. Before you purchase a car you should research what types are most appropriate for you.
In Australia, we drive on the left hand side of the road. To drive a car you must be over 16 years of age, have Third Party Insurance Cover and have a licence to drive in Australia. If you are in Australia on a student (temporary) visa and you do not intend to become a permanent resident, you will be regarded as a visiting driver and will be permitted to drive on your home country licence. If the licence is not written in English, an International Driving Permit, or an English translation must also be carried with the licence when driving.

Trains
Trains are an affordable way to get around Wollongong or if you are travelling North to Sydney, or further South. Wollongong is located on the ‘South Coast’ train line. The destination is shown as Port Kembla, Dapto or Bomaderry (Nowra).
Trains connect the International and Domestic terminals of Sydney Airport with Central Station, where you can change to a Wollongong train. Trains depart from Central approximately each hour and the journey will take around 80 minutes.

Buses are a quick and easy way to get around Wollongong.

Shuttlebuses
The University Shuttlebus is a cheap and cost effective way to get to and from the University from North Wollongong Station. Click here for more details about shuttlebus times and fare prices.
Bicycles
Many people choose to travel by bike. Riding a bike to University may be a good option for you! Bicycles are a cheap alternative method of transport. There are dedicated cycle paths located around Wollongong and surrounding suburbs. Second-hand bikes are available from bicycle stores, or from other students as advertised on notice boards around campus. It is compulsory to wear a helmet when riding a bicycle. Helmets cost approximately AUD$20 to AUD$50 from department stores like K-Mart, Target or Big W.
At UOW, bicycles don’t require an entry permit however they must be parked within designated bike racks located about campus. For more information about Bicycles on campus click here.

Airport Pickup Service
The University provides a free airport pickup service from Sydney International Airport for all new international students arriving at Sydney Airport (International or Domestic terminals) and travelling to Wollongong. This must be requested in advance. Visit Airport Pick Up Services to submit your airport pick up request.
