 1. Committee Role of Vice-Chancellor

The Vice-Chancellor shall, by virtue of his office, be a member of any board, committee or faculty within the University and, unless the Council determines otherwise, may preside at a meeting of any such board, committee or faculty. Accordingly, mention is made of the participation of the Vice-Chancellor in committees only where attendance on a regular basis might be expected. The Vice-Chancellor may nominate a Vice-Principal or Deputy Vice-Chancellor to attend meetings as required and as appropriate.

 2. Committee Role of Vice-Principals and Deputy Vice-Chancellors

The Vice-Chancellor shall, by virtue of his office, be a member of any board, committee or faculty within the University (see Committee Role of Vice Chancellor above). The Vice-Chancellor may nominate a Deputy Vice-Chancellor or Vice-Principal to attend meetings as required and as appropriate.

 3. Role of the Vice-Principal (Administration)

 3.1 Appointment

The Vice-Principal (Administration) shall be appointed by the Vice-Chancellor after a designated selection process. The term of appointment of the Vice-Principal normally shall be for five years.

 3.2 Duties and Responsibilities

Duties:

The Vice-Principal (Administration) is responsible for the management of the administrative affairs of the University

Responsibilities:

  • Support for the Vice-Chancellor in general as required and specifically on all matters of administration.
  • Represent the Vice-Chancellor as and when required.
  • Responsibility for the leadership and oversight of the following Units and Divisions:
  • Strategic Planning Unit
  • Academic Registrar's Division
  • Personnel and Financial Services
  • Buildings and Grounds
  • Accommodation Services
  • Information Technology Services
  • Secretary of the University Council
  • Executive Chair of the UniCentre Board

 3.3 Support for the Vice-Principal (Administration)

Academic Registrar's Division for student administration issues and secretariat support

Accommodation Services for student accommodation information

Buildings and Grounds for space management and University infrastructure.

Information Technology Services for IT infrastructure information including computer, network and communication services

Personnel and Financial Services for personnel issues, financial accounting information, budget issues, industrial relations and Occupational, Health & Safety.

Strategic Planning Unit for planning & development and management information.

 4. Role of the Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor

 4.1 Appointment

The Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor shall be appointed by the Vice-Chancellor after a designated selection process. The term of appointment of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Operations) shall normally be five years.

 

 4.2 Duties and Responsibilities

The Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor is the member of the Senior Executive of the University with specific responsibility for leadership and oversight of:

  • strategies to improve academic management in a dynamic and internationally competitive sector;
  • infrastructure and maintenance issues in support of academic activities;
  • financial and budget issues within Faculties;
  • human resource management and industrial relations relating to academic activities;
  • academic space management;
  • Occupational Health and Safety and Equal Opportunities Offices;
  • Represent the Vice-Chancellor as and when required.

 5. Role of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic)

 5.1 Appointment

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) shall be appointed by the Vice-Chancellor after a designated selection process. The term of appointment of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor normally shall be for five years.

 5.2 Duties and Responsibilities

Duties:

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) will be responsible for coordinating the development of academic plans, maintaining the currency of academic policy and for quality review of academic activities.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) will also be responsible for the Academic Services Division which provides educational, academic staff development and learning support functions.

Responsibilities:

  • Support for the Vice-Chancellor in academic affairs.
  • Represent the Vice-Chancellor as and when required.
  • Chair the University Education Committee.
  • Academic policy development and review.
  • Undergraduate and postgraduate coursework programs.
  • Oversight of student equity issues.
  • Supporting faculties in the development and implementation of academic rolling plans.
  • Supporting faculties in implementation of flexible delivery.
  • Chair of the Academic Staff Development Committee.
  • Co-ordination and academic oversight of educational activities on other campuses in Australia.
  • Sponsoring articulation with other tertiary sector programs.
  • Liaison with the University's marketing arm to provide the strategic overview of academic developments and planning.
  • Chairing of ad hoc reviews as delegated by the Vice Chancellor.
  • Co-ordination and academic oversight of new developments such as the Loftus campus

 5.3 Support for the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic)

Academic Registrar's Division for general Academic developments and policy; academic planning and quality review; forward planning and administrative management for new developments such as the South Coast Campus.

Academic Services Division Comprising Dean of Students, Student Services, Aboriginal Education Centre, Centre for Educational Development & Interactive Resources (CEDIR), Library. Academic Services Division provides support in learning development, educational support, student equity and academic staff development.

Career Development Unit for academic career development and staff development.

 6. Role of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International)

 6.1 Appointment

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International) shall be appointed by the Vice-Chancellor after a designated selection process. The term of appointment of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International) shall normally be five years.

Duties

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International) is responsible for the development and oversight of the international affairs of the University.

Responsibilities

  • Support for the Vice-Chancellor in general as required and specifically on all international issues.
  • Represent the Vice-Chancellor as and when required.
  • Chair of the University Internationalisation Committee.
  • Responsible for coordinating and integrating the operations of

 6.3 Support for the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International)

UniAdvice for student recruitment, admissions, marketing, alumni, community relations and development issues

The Public Affairs Unit for media services, corporate and government relations, VIP events and protocol.

Wollongong University College for the preparation of students through English language, academic preparation and pathway programs.

UOW in Dubai for the provision of academic, financial and administrative activities.

International Projects Division for international consulting, project and facilities management.

 7. Role of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research)

 7.1 Appointment

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) shall be appointed by the Vice-Chancellor after a designated selection process. The term of appointment of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor normally shall be for five years.

 7.2 Duties and Responsibilities

Duties:

The DVC(R) has principal responsibility for management of the University's research endeavours and for higher degree research students.

Responsibilities:

  • Support for the Vice-Chancellor in general as required and specifically on all research-related issues.
  • Represent the Vice-Chancellor as and when required.
  • Chair of the University Research Committee.
  • Responsible for the Office of Research which provides support for, and management of, research grants, research contracts and consultancies, ethics and higher degree research students and scholarships.
  • Research policy development, review and quality control.
  • Strategic planning for research and development.
  • Commercialisation of research opportunities.
  • External research partnerships including, but not limited to, Cooperative Research Centres, ARC Key Centres and international research partnerships.
  • Management and distribution of block research funding (Institutional Grants Scheme and Research Infrastructure Block Grant).
  • Provision of advice to the Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Operations) on the distribution of the Research Training Scheme (RTS).
  • Promotion of UOW and its research in internal, local, national and international forums.
  • Development and maintenance of a research culture in the University, including where appropriate providing advice on recruitment of key research staff.
