Faculty Education Committee

TABLE OF CONTENTS

Terms of Reference

The Faculty Education Committee (FEC) aims to support the objectives of the University's Learning & Teaching Strategic Plan:

1.To foster within our students the Attributes of a Wollongong Graduate
2. To support student learning
3. To offer quality teaching programs
4. To support quality teaching and professionalism  

To achieve that aim, the FEC:

(i) oversees the quality assurance of teaching and learning practices in the Faculty;
(ii) monitors and reviews educational policy, practice and programs in the Faculty;
(iii) advises the Dean and the Faculty on areas of best practice, issues of concern, resources and opportunities for new initiatives;
(iv) informs Faculty members, monitors and reports to the Dean on the implementation of teaching and learning (including assessment) policies and strategies and Codes of Practice;
(v) facilitates and coordinates course planning, specifically ensuring that course proposals comply with University rules, procedures and policies;
(vi) provides feedback on Faculty issues and advises on University policy and practice, via the University Education Committee.

Additional specific terms of reference may be defined by each Faculty to address needs and developments. Faculties are encouraged to exercise initiative in defining the activities of their Education Committees .

Membership

Each Faculty will determine the Chairperson and composition of the Education Committees and their internal reporting mechanisms, within broad guidelines established by the University Education Committee.

Quorum

The Committee shall have a quorum which is equal to one-half or, where one-half is not a whole number, the whole number next higher to one-half of the total number of members for the time being of the Committee.

General

Each Faculty Education Committee will report to University Education Committee through Faculty Executive Committee and the Dean and shall provide the primary liaison between the Faculty executive and the proposals and approvals.

Quality Assurance and Improvement Responsibilities

It is the responsibility of Faculty Education Committees to ensure that the Faculty has appropriate systems in place to implement the objectives of the Learning & Teaching Strategic Plan and to develop, monitor and ensure compliance with University and Faculty Quality Assurance systems and processes in relation to:

  1. Educational Policies and Practices: The quality, accuracy and management of all documents related to learning and teaching in the Faculty, eg Subject Outline, and, where relevant, University documents, eg: Calendar, Subject Database, and Promotional Brochures.

  2. Strategies for Communication of Educational Policies and Practices to staff and students, with other faculties and with relevant University units.

  3. Course & Subject Proposals, in accordance with the course and subject approval guidelines.

  4. Course & Subject Review, including Assessment Practices & Processes

  5. Advice, Consultation & Feedback as required by units in the Faculty, the University or other Faculties.

  6. Reporting to the Dean on the achievement of learning & teaching objectives, for inclusion in the annual Faculty Planning & Resources Report.

  7. Review of FEC performance against its Terms of Reference each year and report to Faculty and UEC.
