UOW continues to develop its reputation in niche areas of research; in undertaking a UOW research degree, you can play an exciting and active part in developing the future.
Our researchers teach at all levels, so you will have direct access to professors who play a pivotal role in the latest research. You will also work alongside leading government and industry professionals.
Research training suits candidates interested in careers in academia or research and those who wish to advance their level of professional practice.
Program
At least two thirds of the degree consists of research, which makes an original contribution to knowledge and demonstrates your capacity to conduct independent research. The format and length of the thesis will vary.
All research students are required to present a formal research proposal in their first year of thesis work to demonstrate an understanding of the thesis topic and proposed methodology, including timelines.
There are three research options, Doctor of Philosophy, Professional Doctorate and Masters by Research, all of which have particular entry requirements.
You should first determine your field of study and then consult the faculty or academic unit that conducts research in that area.
Workload
The workload for a postgraduate research program is varied and dependent on the nature of the research. Students enrolled in a Masters by Research or Professional Doctorate may also undertake some coursework subjects.
Flexibility
Research degrees can be undertaken on a part-time or full-time basis; however, the demands of conducting some research (particularly in a research laboratory) may require full-time research for part of the year.
