Postgraduate Research

As a research-intensive institution, UOW conducts  research in all eleven faculties and schools, with a particular emphasis on areas identified as research strengths within the University.

Research Degrees

The heart of the research degree is a written thesis which makes an original contribution to the body of knowledge in the chosen studies and demonstrates the capacity to conduct independent research.

A range of research degrees are offered at UOW, including a Masters by research (1.5 years), PhD (3 years) and, in some faculties and schools, a Professional Doctorate (3 years).

UOW places great emphasis on the contribution made by its international research students, and has a generous offering of research scholarships.

UOW's Research Reputation

UOW has an enviable reputation for its research output and has had its position as one of the top two per cent of universities in the world confirmed by its performance in prestigious international rankings.

Applying for research at UOW

The application procedure involves identifying a research area and a prospective supervisor, and the development of a research proposal prior to submission of a formal application.

Applications must be submitted submitted online.

Admission normally requires the completion of a recognised four-year Bachelor (Honours) degree awarded at Class II, Division 2 or higher in a discipline relevant to the intended area of research. Completion of a Master by Coursework degree containing substantial research or research methodology may also be considered.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Applicants to a PhD may in some cases be required to commence their enrolment in the relevant Masters by Research course and then apply to transfer to the PhD if they achieve a suitable standard.

The PhD Integrated (4 years) integrates a traditional three-year PhD thesis with one-year of coursework.

Applicants should have a minimum of four years of study at degree level, either a four-year Bachelor degree, or a Bachelor degree plus Masters by Coursework, with a minimum Credit average (65% or GPA 3.0 out of 4.0), or equivalent.

Applicants for the PhD Integrated do not need to submit a detailed research proposal or referees’ reports. They should, however, provide a brief Supporting Statement of approximately 200 words outlining the broad area of intended future research and reason for wishing to enrol in a research program.

When you are ready to submit a formal application, go to How to Apply.
