FAQ

What is Early Entry at UOW?

Early Entry is how you can turn your best HSC subjects into a UOW degree.

Early Entry is designed for students entering university directly from High School and applicants are assessed based on their school academic record, not just their ATAR.

If you are successful in your application, you will receive either:

  • A guaranteed offer of a place at UOW.
  • A conditional offer of a place at UOW. This means you will earn a place at UOW if you meet certain conditions—typically, achieving a certain grade in relevant HSC subjects.
How many degrees?

You can apply for up to four degrees through Early Entry. The application form requires you to list these in order of preference, but you will be considered for all courses you select.

Double degrees count as one preference, and you will automatically be considered for the component single degrees offered by the faculty that coordinates the double degree. Read more about double degrees and Early Entry.

Do I need to complete the application in one sitting?

No, after you’ve started your application and added at least one degree preference, you can save it and return later. You will be sent a password that will allow you to resume your application. The password will be sent to the email address you enter in the application.

You will be able to resume and update the application as many times as you want before the closing date. However, once your application is submitted, it cannot be altered.

Why does my application look different?

The Early Entry online application tailors itself to your degree selections.

The application will adjust as you add or remove degrees.  You will not see any requests for results or CV information until you have added a degree choice to your application.

The application will only request the information relevant to the degrees you have chosen.

For example some faculties will not require you to give a reason for wanting to study the degree, others will not require CV information and some won't even require you to enter school marks at this stage.

Do not worry if you are asked to provide different information in your application than your friends have been asked to provide, this not a problem with your application.

What if my school report doesn't include the results the application asks for?

To assess applicants for Early Entry UOW requires subject marks, not just rankings or pass/fail indicators.

If your school reports do not include marks for subjects, you will need to speak to your school and ask them to provide you with a mark for the subject that gives an indication of your level of knowledge and performance in the subject. This can be an exam mark or if exams were not completed an overall assessment mark based on tests and assignments completed for the subject.

Where your school issues grades rather than marks, please ask your school to provide you with the scaling guide that indicates what marks fall into each grade eg. A = 85 - 100.  When entering your subject results please enter the lowest mark of the grade range if your school are not able to provide a more exact mark.

Please also be aware that if these marks are not listed on your school report, you will need to get these in writing (or the scaling sheet for grades) so that you can provide proof of  your results when requested.  This can be in the form of a letter from your school that outlines the marks you have received.  Alternatively you can collect these marks for each subject and type them up into a table yourself and have this stamped and signed by a suitable member of the school staff who has verified that they are correct.  UOW may contact your school or the teacher who has verified these marks to confirm their accuracy.

I am not completing the NSW HSC, how do I list my results?

If you are not sitting the NSW HSC because you are studying interstate or are completing the IB (International Baccalaureate) you will not be able to use the results fields that are shown in the online application as these fields are based on subjects offered for the NSW HSC.

To enter your results, please 'untick' the box that indicates you have completed your schooling in NSW.  You will then be provided a text box in which you can type your subjects studied and the results received for each.

The other requirements for Early Entry still apply for your results - you must provide results for all subjects undertaken and where exams were completed provide the exam result rather than an overall assessment result.

I am doing Pathways, which results should I enter?

If you are completing the HSC via pathways and have already completed some HSC subjects, please provide your final HSC exam marks in the Year 12 Half-Yearly results section rather than earlier results.

How do I enter referee details to my application?

Referee details are recorded against the individual degree.  For this reason when you add a degree to your application that requires a referee you will notice that a referee request appears.  Referee details are only required for degrees from the Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences.

In order to add your referee information you will need to select the 'edit' option that appears next to the degree in the list of degrees added to your application.

Once you select the 'edit' option you will be able to edit the information saved for that degree.  You can update your degree comments, and also add in the referee details.

Once you have entered the required details you will need to click the 'update' button, that is located just above the degree list.

This will save the referee details against that degree.   Once you have done this you will notice that the referee information shows on the degree choices tab of your application.

What type of questions will be asked in the interview?

You may be asked about your interest in the degree, your passions and interests, extracurricular activities and other achievements. See more in our Early Entry interview guide.

What if I live far away and can’t make my interview?

Contact the relevant faculty to discuss this situation after invitations have been issued.

How and when do I get my offer?

All Early Entry offers will be issued (by email or post) before the 2011 HSC commences on Monday 17 October. The earliest an offer will be sent is 23 September. Exact timing will vary between faculties, degrees and applicants. For this reason we ask that you do not contact the faculties or UOW between 23 September 23 and October 14 to enquire about your Early Entry outcome as we will be in the process of determining offers and notifying all applicants.

If you have not received your Early Entry outcome by Monday 17 October 2011 please contact the faculty to enquire about your application.  As we do send some offers via email please be sure to check junk mail folders in your email account for Early Entry correspondence.

Do I still have to apply through UAC?

Yes. Without a formal offer from UAC, you cannot study at UOW, regardless of any Early Entry offer made.

Do I have to make my Early Entry offer my first UAC preference?

For your Early Entry offer to be activated, the degree specified in your Early Entry offer needs to be your highest eligible preference.

What is a highest eligible preference?

UAC will assess your list of preferences from first to last. Your highest eligible preference is the first degree in your list of preferences that you meet all the requirements for.

UAC only makes one offer to each applicant. Once an offer is made to your highest eligible preference, any courses ranked lower on your preference list are not considered, and the process is finished.

You can change your UAC preferences until midnight 5 January 2012. See the UAC website for more information on choosing preferences.

Can I apply for a scholarship?

Yes, all future students can apply for scholarships at UOW. This is a separate process to Early Entry, and closes 30 September.

Can I defer my Early Entry offer?

Once an Early Entry offer has been validated by a formal offer through UAC, you can defer your offer by following normal deferral processes.

What happens if I don’t get Early Entry?

You are at no disadvantage if you apply for Early Entry and don’t receive an offer. You can still apply to the degree through the normal UAC process. We encourage you to use the Early Entry process to learn more about university study, UOW and our courses.

Do I have to accept an Early Entry offer?

No. If you receive an Early Entry offer, you are not locked into that course or courses. Your formal offer to study will always come through UAC for your Highest Eligible Preference.
