Study Options
Your child can study whatever they desire.
At UOW, they will broaden their outlook on life and they have a choice of nine faculties in which to do so.
They can integrate international studies or a second language into their degree. And the International Exchange Program will give them the option of studying at one of more than 100 universities around the world.
Your child’s interests
You should discuss with your son or daughter the careers that interest them. Encourage them to find out what qualifications can lead them there. Determine which degrees are relevant, then what subjects they should take in Years 11 and 12.
They also needs to consider their academic ability. What subjects are they good at? If they love English, they may be suited to a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature or a Bachelor of Communication, majoring in Journalism. If they are good at physics or maths, they could pursue a career in mechatronic engineering.
Ideas
Future Finder suggests which subjects should be taken in preparation for particular study programs—and can also recommend which study programs might be best suited to particular students.
For other ideas, go to CourseFinder and click on ‘UNDERGRADUATE’.
Once your child has decided on and enrolled in a degree, they should aim to select first-year subjects that keep their options open in case they have a change of heart.
Flexibility
Many of our programs allow students to choose elective subjects across different disciplines so they can develop a range of skills and knowledge that meet their own unique needs.
Our double degrees allow students to specialise twice, so they can pursue their interests and further their career prospects.
And a double major allows students to fine-tune their focus—they don't need to sacrifice one talent or interest for another.
In some fields, students don’t need to decide what they will major in before they start. With a degree in the Faculty of Arts, for example, they can choose a range of subjects and make a decision in their second year about where they want their studies to take them.
If your child wants more from their degree and is a high-achieving student, they could apply for the Dean's Scholar Program.
They can also choose to study full-time or part-time.
