Great Working Environment
The University of Wollongong offers a great working environment with an emphasis on career development and learning.
“Leaving High School, the Management Cadetship was a great way for me to enter the business world. It provides me with a fantastic opportunity to combine work and study, which has proven to be both challenging and rewarding. So far I have had the opportunity to work in Personnel & Financial Services and have recently started a new placement in Policy and Governance. The beautiful campus and supportive staff provide a great work environment. I have found that everyone that I have worked with are welcoming and keen to share their knowledge and expertise. I believe that the cadetship will provide me with valuable skills and experience to begin the next stage of my career.”
Emma Purdy – 2nd Year Management Cadet, Bachelor of Commerce
Great Challenges
Cadets are challenged in their roles to continue to learn and develop their skills
“For me the Management Cadetship is an opportunity to combine work and study which has proven to be an invaluable experience. There are numerous challenges presented along the way which will test and develop your:
- Organisation and time management skills to meet deadlines and function under pressure,
- Initiative in solving problems and learning to prioritise effectively and
- Ability to respond and acclimatise to changing environments.
These Challenges assist in personally and professionally preparing you for the business world and will give you a competitive edge over other graduates in your chosen field. I would recommend the Management Cadetship program to any young individual who is hard working, highly motivated and ready for a rewarding Challenge”.
Caroline Hartcher – 3rd Year Management Cadet, Bachelor of Commerce (International Business & Management)
Great Experiences
Cadets participate in many other activities such as graduation ceremonies, promotional days, and staff development programs. Cadets are also encouraged to consider a period of overseas study under the University's study abroad program.
“Having chosen a Bachelor of Commerce, I was unsure of the direction I wanted to take with my degree. The cadetship has helped me to make experience-based, informed decisions about my studies and the career direction in which I would like to venture. The program provided not just exposure, but substantial experience in a multitude of work units including human resources, governance, audit, client service, international business and marketing. I have contributed to a number of challenging satisfying and significant projects that have provided and expanded my skills.
The cadetship has been an incredible opportunity for me to develop proficiency in the key skills employers seek in graduates.”
Shibani Iyer – 4th Year Management Cadet, Bachelor of Commerce (Economics)

The University of Wollongong is one of Australia's top universities, consistently achieving 5-star ratings from the Good Universities Guide.
“The Management Cadetship caters to the development of a diverse array of business skills. It helps shape the direction of your study and chosen major by offering experience in full-time employment combined with a great University of Wollongong degree. The skills I have gained in the workplace complement those in my study; it really gives you the edge.”

“Choosing to undertake a Management Cadetship at the University of Wollongong has proven to be one of the best decisions I have ever made. The Cadetship is a well-rounded package focused on allowing the individual to excel and I found the work environment to be especially welcoming and supportive. Combining work and study was a challenging yet rewarding experience that, upon completion, gave me the skills required to pursue my dream career with Proctor & Gamble in Asia.
I recently moved to Singapore to take up my new position and truly believe it wouldn’t have been possible without the professional and life experiences I gained through being a Cadet. The Cadetship gave me the edge over the hundreds of candidates vying for my role at P&G. I currently work in Consumer & Market research for Pampers, focusing on the Southeast Asian markets. This role sees me travel throughout Asia gaining consumer insights and applying the many skills I gained throughout my time at UOW. The Management Cadetship was a fantastic stepping stone to exciting things and will prepare any young individual for a promising and successful career in the professional arena, anywhere in the world!”

Expand Your Possibilities
“Taking the Management Cadetship at the University of Wollongong was the best decision I ever made in terms of my career development. The cadetship involves a rotation through the major functions of the University including Finance, Marketing and Human Resources. In these areas my general awareness of the processes and principles underpinning these functions have assisted me time and time again during subsequent roles and the skills I learnt in these areas were very transportable outside of the Education sector.
During my two years of specialisation I was given the opportunity to work in the performance management and business intelligence space. When I completed the cadetship and sought employment, my two years of specific real work experience in the job, along with my 3 years of additional broad business experience allowed me to step straight into a consultancy role whilst others who graduated at the same time as me were still seeking graduate or entry level positions.
After leaving the University my career continued to accelerate, still often drawing on the breadth of knowledge about holistic business operations I gained during the cadetship. In particular consultancy has given me the opportunity to work for over 100 of Australia’s largest companies. My experiences have been varied and include everything from technical IT, to sales and team management roles.
Recently I have returned to work at the University and have taken on the role of the Director of the Performance Management Team. It has given me immense pleasure to ultimately be able to return to the University – an employer and environment I love – and see the wonderful growth and the success of the institution. Those successful in obtaining a Management Cadetship today are entering an organisation with significantly broader opportunities for learning, growth and potential than the one that launched my career so successfully over 10 years ago and that should be a very exciting prospect for potential candidates.”
